Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons brought the regular season to a close on Sunday afternoon with a double header split in Urbana, dropping the first game 2-1, before exploding offensively with a 20-7 win in game two.
The Falcons (24-17, 24-12) finish the regular season with wins in five out of their last six games, and have secured the No. 3 seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, while the Blue Knights (16-24, 14-20) brought their season to an end with the split.
Game One
The Falcons were limited to just a run on six hits in the opening contest of the day, and spoiled a great start from
Zack LaRocca (5-3) who allowed just a pair of runs on seven hits while fanning six in a complete game effort.
Notre Dame scored their lone run of the contest in the top of the third.
Jake Kirsh started the inning with a base hit, and
Austin Barnhart's sacrifice bunt moved him over to second.
Danny Beaver followed with a single to place Kirsh on third, and he came home on a single from
Travis Smetana.
Urbana tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning in a RBI single from Jordan Pergrem to score Michael Barrea, and they won it in their final at bat in the seventh. Enmanuel Lopez started the inning with a single, and advanced to second on an error. Brody Bream replaced him on the bases, and eventually scored the game winning run two batters later on a RBI single from DJ Collins.
Game Two
The Falcons turned in their best offensive performance of the year, scoring 20 times on 18 hits, in a game where both teams emptied out their benches and a ton of players saw action.
Notre Dame scored multiple runs in five innings, including seven in the fifth inning, and posted runs in every inning except the third.
TJ Lett and
Keifer Quick highlighted the big game for the Falcons offensively, as they both produced four hits. Lett went 4-for-4, with four runs scored and he drove in five, while Quick went 4-for-4 as well with a trio of runs and three RBIs as well.
In addition to Quick and Lett, four other Falcons drove in multiple runs.
Hank Beasore belted a two-run homer, his first of the year, while
Blake Miller,
Jalen Fields and
Shane DeFranco drove in two runs each as well.
Jeff Stover (3-3) was credited with the victory, and was one of three pitchers to see action.
Matt Seekins tossed three scoreless innings of work, and
Dante LaRiccia pitched the seventh.
The victory concludes the regular season, but the Falcons have secured the No. 3 seed in the MEC Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 7, in Beckley, W.Va. Notre Dame is scheduled to play the night game at 7 p.m., and will face West Liberty in the first round.
