Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons took both ends of a road double header on Saturday afternoon, as they came away with 4-1 and 11-5 victories over Urbana.
Notre Dame (23-16, 23-11 MEC) has now won four games in a row, while Urbana (15-22, 13-18 MEC) has lost seven straight.
Game One
The first game was a bit of a statistical anomaly, as Urbana doubled NDC in the hit column (6-3), but Notre Dame came out on top, 4-1. The Falcons received six strong innings from
Zach Gresch (4-4), who allowed just a run on six hits while fanning eight batters in the victory.
The lone run that Gresch received came in the home half of the third inning, where Urbana took a 1-0 advantage on a solo homer from Evan Hacker.
Notre Dame took advantage of a pair of errors in the top of the fifth inning, and scored three times to take the lead. The inning began with back-to-back walks issued to
Troy Findlay and
Austin Barnhart.
Danny Beaver then reached on a single to load the bases, before
Travis Smetana reached on a fielder's choice which scored Findlay to tie the game. Later in the inning, an error by the pitcher scored Barnhart to give the Falcons the lead. Notre Dame took advantage of one last defensive mishap, as
Keifer Quick reached on an error by the shortstop, which scored Smetana to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.
The Falcons put one last run on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Beaver's second hit of the contest was a leadoff triple, and he scored on the very next play, as Smetana belted a single to give Notre Dame a 4-1 advantage.
Urbana put a little threat together in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they had runners on first and second with one out, when
Phil Ramos (4) replaced Gresch on the mound, and retired the final two batters of the game to snag the save.
Game Two
Notre Dame made up for lost time in the second contest, as they scored 11 runs on 13 hits, scoring in all but two innings, including a six-run third inning which essentially put the game away.
A wild pitch plated
TJ Lett in the top half of the first inning to give Notre Dame the lead, before they added two more runs in the second. Smetana belted a RBI single in the top of the second, and an error by the left fielder allowed Beaver to score as well on the play.
Five extra base hits produced runs for the Falcons in the top of the third inning, and they scored six times to give them a 9-0 lead.
Shane DeFranco got the party started with a solo homer, his second of the year.
Jake Kirsh belted a run scoring double to plate
Blake Miller, before Beaver smacked a two-run triple. Beaver came home later in the inning on Smetana's two-bagger, and the inning was capped on Quick's RBI double to score Smetana.
The Falcons added single runs in the fifth and sixth. Lett stroked a RBI triple to score Beaver in the fifth inning, and the Falcons scored one final time in the sixth, on
Austin Barnhart's RBI single.
Five Falcons hit safely multiple times, including Beaver who led the Falcons with four hits on the day. Smetana, Kirsh, DeFranco and Barnhart also hit safely twice in the contest.
Josh Armbruster (3-3) scored the victory after allowing four runs in five hits while fanning four batters over six innings to score the victory.
The Falcons and Blue Knights will bring the regular season to a close with a double header on Sunday afternoon in Urbana, Ohio. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
