Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W. Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference double header against West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 in game one, and 6-3 in game two.
For the Falcons (18-13, 18-10 MEC) the losses mark just the second time this season that they were swept in a double header, while the Yellow Jackets (23-12, 23-9 MEC) have now won five of their last six.
Game One
Josh Armbruster (2-3) pitched extremely well in the opening contest. He went the distance, tossing six innings and allowed just a run on six hits while fanning five, but took the loss.
The lone run came across in the bottom of the fourth inning. Anthony Payne stepped in with a runner on second and two outs, and delivered a clutch RBI single to plate the only run of the game.
Notre Dame registered eight hits in the contest, but weren't able to push any runs across. The Falcons put a threat together in the top of the seventh inning.
Bryan Blondeaux started the inning with a single to center, and made his way to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Clayton Farrar then singled, and
TJ Lett replaced him on the bases, before stealing second. With runners on second and third and one down, Josh Falbo fanned back-to-back batters to end the game.
Farrar, Blondeaux, and
Danny Beaver all hit safely twice in the contest.
Game Two
The Yellow Jackets scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, before pulling away with a trio of runs in the sixth, while the Falcons did not get on the board until they were down to their final out in the seventh.
In the second, WVSU took a 1-0 lead, as Jamison Jones belted a run scoring double to score Payne. A passed ball scored Brandon Wright in the bottom of the third inning, and Travyis Patterson ripped a one out RBI single in the fourth inning.
Wright struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning with a one out RBI single, and two batters later, Josh Kiser reached on an error that plated two more runs to break the game open.
The first two batters of the seventh inning were retired for the Falcons, before
Shane DeFranco began a two-out rally with a walk.
Troy Findlay followed with a single to center, and
Austin Barnhart loaded the bases with a base hit.
Jalen Fields followed with a two-run double to right, and Barnhart scored moments later on a wild pitch.
Barnhart and
Travis Smetana paced the Falcons with two hits each.
Carter Daniels (1-1) allowed a pair of runs, one earned, on five hits over three innings and struck out two in the loss.
The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, April 21, when they head to Indianapolis, Ind., for a non-conference double header against Indianapolis. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
