Box Score 2 AVON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons took both ends of Saturday's double header against the first place Shepherd Rams at All Pro Freight Stadium, with 4-3 and 9-5 victories.
Notre Dame (14-9, 14-6 MEC) has now won three in a row against the Rams dating back to their series last season, while Shepherd (23-5, 23-5 MEC) has lost three straight games, their longest skid of the season.
Game One
Josh Armbruster (2-2) induced a trio of double plays in the first contest of the day, and consistently pitched out of trouble.
The Falcons were the first ones on the board, taking advantage of an error in the bottom of the third inning.
TJ Lett reached on an errant throw from third baseman Bryce Shemer. The two base throwing error put him on second, before he stole third. Two batters later,
Jake Kirsh brought him home on a RBI groundout.
The Rams were kept off the board by Armbruster for the first five innings, until they scored a couple of times on four hits while capitalizing on an error in the sixth. Jonathan Sarty started the inning with a base hit to right, before stealing second. Spencer Wolfe then singled to center field, and the ball went through the legs of
Danny Beaver. Sarty scored easily from second, and Wolfe came all the way around to score as well on the error to give Shepherd a 2-1 lead.
Shepherd's Sam Crater (6-2) took a no-hit bit into the bottom of the sixth inning, where Kirsh broke it up with a leadoff single to right field.
Brandon Kovach replaced him on the bases and moved to second on Beaver's sacrifice bunt. Walks were issued to
Travis Smetana and
Bryan Blondeaux, loading the bases with two outs for
Taylor Neville, who delivered a clutch, bases clearing double down the line in right to give the Falcons a 4-2 advantage.
The Rams tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh inning, but with the tying run aboard,
Matt Seekins (1) scored his first save of the season by striking out Spencer Wolfe to secure the victory.
Armbruster scored the victory, allowing a pair of runs on five hits while fanning a trio of batters in the process over six innings. Seekins notched his first save of the season in his only inning of action.
Game Two
After being held to just a pair of hits in game one, the Falcons went wild and scored nine times on 12 hits in the second contest. They scored in every inning but the third.
The Falcons took control early in the second game, by scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. Beaver began the inning with a single through the right side of the infield, and
Travis Smetana's sacrifice bunt moved him over to second before he came home on
Blake Miller's RBI single to center.
Neville followed Miller's RBI single with a base hit to left center, and they both advanced on a wild pitch. Lett then walked to load the bases, and
Shane DeFranco belted a two-run double down the line in left.
Andrew Hurd followed with an RBI groundout, and
Austin Barnhart drove in the final run of the inning on a run scoring single to center.
Notre Dame added another run in the bottom of the second, on a bizarre play. Beaver started the inning with a double to the gap in left center field, then stole third and home on the same play to give NDC a 6-1 lead. Beaver stole third on the play, but slid past the bag, and got too far away from the base to go back. He then avoided a tag from the Rams' third baseman, and beat the throw to the plate.
Beaver scored for a third time in the bottom of the fourth inning. He started the inning with his second double of the contest, and a pair of fly balls allowed him to advance, as he scored on
Blake Miller's sacrifice fly.
Another run came across for the Falcons in the home half of the fifth inning. Notre Dame had runners on first and second with one down, when
Jalen Fields ripped a run scoring single to center, giving NDC an 8-1 advantage.
The Rams got four of their five runs on homers. Dom Wyshinski hit a solo shot in the top of the second, and the Rams scored four times to give them some hope in the sixth. They got three of those four on Jacob Carney's homer to right.
Notre Dame added a big insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lett reached on a two out walk, stole second base, and scored for a third time on the afternoon on DeFranco's single to left.
Four Falcons hit safely multiple times in the contest, and Beaver led the way going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Miller, DeFranco and Neville each hit safely two times each for the Falcons as well. Miller went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while both Neville and DeFranco both went 2-for-4, and DeFranco drove in three runs.
Zack LaRocca (3-1) went the distance to score the win for the Falcons. He retired 11 in a row from the second to the sixth inning, and allowed five runs on four hits while fanning four in a winning effort.
The Falcons and Rams will finish their weekend series at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
