Series split

Falcons split series with Charleston

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons pounded out 12 runs on 14 hits in the second game of the day on Sunday, as they split another double header with Charleston, falling 3-2 in game one before taking game two, 12-1.

The Falcons (10-6, 10-4 MEC) scored their second series split in conference action this season, and the Golden Eagles (7-11, 6-13) have now lost seven of their last 10.

Zach Gresch turned in a nice effort in game one, but the Falcons saw a 2-0 lead disappear as the Golden Eagles scored three times in the fifth inning to come away with the win before NDC's offense blew up in a 12-1 victory in game two.

Game One
The Falcons fired the first shot, scoring in the top of the third inning. Jalen Fields reached on a one out single, before come around on Travis Smetana's two-out RBI double to left field.

NDC added another in the top of the top of the fourth, on another two-out hit. Bryan Blondeaux reached on a one out walk, then made his way to third on Austin Barnhart's single to right, before coming home on Troy Findlay's two-out RBI single to right field.

Notre Dame's 2-0 advantage held until Charleston scored three time in the fifth inning to pull away. The Golden Eagles got their runs on three consecutive hits. The inning was highlighted by run scoring doubles from Gunter and Houser, and a RBI single from Easterling.

Gresch (1-2) turned in an efficient performance, throwing just 74 pitches, while allowing three runs on four hits while fanning four but took the loss. Barnhart paced the Falcons with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3.

Game Two
The Falcons used a trio of big innings offensively, while Jeff Stover (2-1) and Phil Ramos combined to toss a three-hitter.

Notre Dame put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning to set the tone, and the scoring started right away as Danny Beaver began the game with a solo homer to right. The Falcons would get their next two runs on RBI singles from Blake Miller and TJ Lett

The Golden Eagles scored their lone run in game two, in the bottom of the fourth inning, before the Falcons put the game away by scoring six times in the top of the fifth.

Shane DeFranco broke things open with a bases loaded double to left which scored Travis Smetana and Keifer Quick. Two batters later, Andrew Hurd stroked a single to center which brought Blake Miller home. Fields brought in NDC's next run on a RBI single to left, before Lett scored on Beaver's sacrifice fly and a balk brought in Hurd to cap the inning.

Notre Dame added three more in the top of the seventh. After a one-out double from Smetana put runners on second and third, Quick drove Fields home on a RBI groundout, before Blake Miller smashed a two-run homer to left, his second long ball of the season to bring in the final runs of the game.

Stover scored the victory after tossing five strong innings, allowing just a run on three hits while fanning two, and Ramos tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief.

Fields and Miller both had huge games for NDC offensively. Miller went 3-for-3 with three runs and drove in three as well, while Fields went 3-for-4 in the nine hole, with a run and an RBI. DeFranco and Hurd also hit safely twice.

The Falcons are in action again on Friday, April 3, when they play host to Wheeling Jesuit at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, for another Mountain East Conference double header. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
