Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Notre Dame right-hander
Josh Armbruster tossed a one-hit shutout on Saturday afternoon, as the Notre Dame Falcons split a Mountain East Conference twin bill with Charleston, dropping game one 7-5, before taking game two, 6-0.
Notre Dame (9-5, 9-3) has now won three of their last four games, and Charleston (6-11, 5-12) has now lost six of their last eight games after the split.
Armbruster stole the show for the Falcons in game two, tossing a one-hit shutout, while using just 80 pitches to come away with the win, and fanned six batters. Notre Dame was outdone by a six-run fifth inning in the first contest.
Game One
Notre Dame held a 2-0 lead in game one, before UC scored six times in the sixth inning to regain control of the contest and pulled away.
The Falcons scored first in the top of the second inning, as
Shane DeFranco singled home
TJ Lett to give the Falcons a 1-0 edge. Notre Dame added to that in the fourth, as DeFranco came through again, with his second RBI single of the game, this one scored
Blake Miller who opened the inning with a walk.
Charleston cut the lead in half with a run in the home half of the fourth inning before they dug in for a half dozen runs in the fifth. They took advantage of a pair of defensive mishaps, including a throwing error at the start of the inning, before stroking five consecutive run scoring hits to give them a 7-2 lead.
Notre Dame plated a trio of runs in the top of the seventh inning to make things interesting, but came up a little short. The inning was highlighted by
Keifer Quick's two-run double to left, scoring
Austin Barnhart and
Travis Smetana.
Zack LaRocca (1-1) tossed 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits while fanning three and took the loss. DeFranco, Quick and Smetana led the way for the Falcons, as they each had two hits apiece.
Game Two
Armbruster (1-1) stole the show in game two. He came three outs away from tossing what would have been the second no-hitter in the history of the program. Armbruster allowed just a seventh inning single to Zach Gunter in an incredible winning effort. He also fanned six batters while walking just two.
He got plenty of run support as well, which began in the first inning.
Blake Miller drove in the first run of the inning on a single to left field to plate Smetana, and later in the inning, Quick scored as Lett reached on a fielder's choice.
Notre Dame added a trio of runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 advantage. The inning began with back-to-back doubles from Smetana and Quick, and Miller followed with a two-run single to center. Later in the inning, Barnhart brought Miller home on a two-out RBI double to right.
The Falcons put one more run on the board in the top of the sixth inning, as
Jalen Fields crossed home plate on Smetana's sacrifice fly.
Armbruster led the charge for the Falcons on the hill, while Quick, Miller and Smetana paced the NDC offense. Quick had a huge game, going 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Miller drove in three runs in a 2-for-4 effort at the dish and Smetana went 2-for-4 as well while scoring twice.
The Falcons are in action again to finish up the weekend series against Charleston on Sunday, March 29. The double header action in Charleston, W.Va., begins at 1 p.m.
