Falcons sweep West Liberty in mid-week twin bill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
AVON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons used late inning heroics to come away with a pair of big victories at All Pro Freight Stadium on Wednesday evening, as they executed a double header sweep of West Liberty, with 4-3 and 15-5 victories.

The double header sweep for the  Falcons (8-4, 8-2 MEC) marks their third in conference play this season, while the losses for the Hilltoppers (13-7, 9-5 MEC) puts them on a three-game losing skid, their longest of the season.

Both games were lengthy, as the Falcons needed 10 innings to take care of West Liberty in game one, winning on a wild pitch, and then they used a 10-run sixth inning in game two, to come away with a 15-5 victory for the double header sweep.

Game One
Notre Dame got on the board first in the home half of the first inning. Danny Beaver began the inning with a single to center field, before swiping a pair of bases and scoring. Beaver stole second, before swiping third, and he scored on an errant throw from the catcher, which ended up in left field.

The Hilltoppers came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. With two out and a runner on second, Tim Mirandy stroked a single to center, which scored the game tying run. Later in the inning, Mirandy was thrown out at home plate by TJ Lett, trying to score on a single to left.

West Liberty plated the go ahead run in the top of the fifth inning. Jared Carranza reached on a single to start the inning before making his way to second on an errant throw. DJ Busby then hit a ground ball to first base, and Keifer Quick's throw to third in an attempt to snag Carranza missed by a hair, putting runners at the corners, and Anthony Pierro hit into a double play which allowed Carranza to score.

Notre Dame then capitalized on a few West Liberty errors to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Falcons had runners on first and second with two outs, when Travis Smetana doubled down the line in left. Jalen Fields scored the tying run, and the ball was bobbled by the left fielder, as it rolled into foul territory, which allowed Beaver to score from first base, giving NDC a 3-2 lead.

The Hilltoppers tied the game again in the top of the sixth inning, as Yale Hughes belted a two-out RBI single to score Vincent Haddox.

Both teams had chances to score as the game went into extra frames, but the Falcons finally cashed in, in the bottom of the tenth inning. Beaver began the inning with a single, and Smetana bunted him over to second base. As the Hilltoppers were intentionally walking Keifer Quick, Beaver stole third. Bryan Blondeaux followed, and he was intentionally walked after Quick stole second, and during the next at bat, a wild pitch brought Beaver home to end the game.

Phil Ramos (3-0) was outstanding in relief for the Falcons. He allowed just two hits over 4.1 innings of scoreless relief while fanning three to score the victory. Zach Gresch turned in a strong start, allowing just three runs over 5.2 innings and struck out six but did not factor into the decision.

Game Two
West Liberty got on the board first in the second contest, plating a run in the top of the third. Anthony Pierro reached on a one out single, then advanced on a passed ball and a wild pitch, before scoring on a two-out single from Tim Hughes.

It didn't take the Falcons long to respond, as they batted around and scored five times in the bottom of the third. Notre Dame tied the game as Smetana walked with the bases loaded to score Clayton Farrar. Quick then drove in the go-ahead run with a RBI single to left, and Blake Miller followed with a two-run single to left field. Bryan Blondeaux capped the big rally with a two-out double down the left field line to score Quick.

The Hilltoppers chipped away at the deficit, scoring one in the fourth, before getting a pair in the fifth inning. Jon Michael Brunner drove in the run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and Tim Hughes and Vaddox stroked back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth to bring West Liberty within one (5-4).

West Liberty then tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, when Pierro struck again with a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Brunner.

The Falcons went to work again and regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring 10 times to put the game out of reach, doing all of their damage with two outs. Barnhart and Smetana both walked, and with two outs they advanced on a passed ball, which set up Quick's third hit of the game, a huge two-run single to left to give the Falcons the lead. He scored moments later as Blake Miller reached on an infield single, and an errant throw allowed Quick to score. Later in the inning, Clayton Farrar walked with the bases loaded to score Tanner Dovsek, and the Falcons added another as Jake Kirsh reached on an infield single to plate Lett. Barnhart followed Kirsh with a bases loaded walk to bring in the next run.

Notre Dame wasn't done, as they added four more runs. Beaver belted his third hit of the game with a two-run single to center, and Quick drove in two more on a single through the left side.

Quick had an incredible game, going 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBIS. He was one of five Falcons to hit safely multiple times in the contest. Beaver went 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs as well. Miller delivered a three-hit performance as well, while Lett and Kirsh hit safely twice.

Matt Seekins (1-1) scored the victory for the Falcons, after allowing just a run on a hit over two innings of relief.

The Falcons are in action again this weekend, when they hit the road for a weekend MEC series with Charleston. The first pitch for Saturday's twin bill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
