Falcons split series with Concord

AVON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons won in walk off fashion for the first time this season, as they split a weekend series with Concord, winning game one 7-6, and falling 11-5 in the finale at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  

Notre Dame (6-4, 6-2 MEC) by splitting the weekend series, has now won six of their last eight games, while the split for Concord (8-7, 7-5 MEC) gives them wins in six of their last nine games. 

Game One
Notre Dame fired the first shot with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Falcons were able to capitalize on a two-out error to plate the run. Back-to-back walks were issued to Travis Smetana and Keifer Quick, before Blake Miller reached on a fielder's choice, and on the play, an errant throw from the shortstop allowed Smetana to score. 

The Falcons then used back-to-back two-out RBI doubles to add to their lead in the top of the third. Austin Barnhart led the inning off with a single, and scored on Jalen Fields's two-out double down the right field line. Danny Beaver followed with a run scoring double to right, giving NDC a 3-0 lead. 

Concord scored their first two runs of the contest in the top of the third, on consecutive run scoring singles from Jerrod Groves and Andy Szamski. 

TJ Lett started the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple to center, and Fields followed with a double to right center, his second RBI double of the game. Smetana reached on an errant throw from the third baseman which scored fields and Quick brought in the final run of the inning with a single back up the middle. 

Concord was able to battle back, by scoring the next four runs, getting three of those in the fifth. Holt Cassada brought in the first un on a groundout, and Damon Frazier brought in the next two on a single to left field. The Mountain Lions tied it in the top of the sixth inning when Groves struck again on a RBI single to center. 

Notre Dame won in walk off fashion for the first time this season in the bottom of the seventh. Clayton Farrar reached on an error with one out, and made his way to second after Barnhart walked. Tanner Dovsek pinch ran for Farrar at second, and Andrew Hurd came through with the game winning hit, stroking an 0-2 pitch to center, scoring Dovsek to win the game for the Falcons. 

Phil Ramos (2-0) scored the victory for Notre Dame after tossing a scoreless seventh inning, while Barinder Rakkar (1-1) took the loss, after allowing seven runs, three earned on eight hits while going the distance. 

Game Two
Concord plated a pair of runs right out of the gate to start game two. Cassada drove in the first run on a groundout, and Damon Frazier followed with a RBI single back up the middle. The Mountain Lions added another in the top of the third, on Ryan Johnston's two-out RBI single to center. 

Notre Dame was able to dig into the deficit in the home half of the third. Fields was hit by a pitch to start the inning, before stealing second. Fields made his way to third after Danny Beaver reached on a bunt base hit. Fields then scored on a double steal, and Beaver came home later on the inning on Smetana's groundout. 

The Mountain Lions then blew the game open with a five run fourth inning. Szamski came through with the first big hit, driving in a run on a bases loaded single through the left side of the infield.  Holt Cassada followed with a two-run base hit through the right side of the infield. Damon Frazier followed with a RBI single, and an errant throw brought in the final run of the inning. 

Notre Dame was able to get two of those back in the home half of the fourth inning. Hurd walked with one down, and Lett followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Later in the inning, they both scored on two-out single from Beaver to right field. 

Concord added to their lead with another run in the fifth and two more in the seventh. The Falcons plated their final run of the game in the last of the sixth inning, as Quick legged out an infield single with two outs which allowed TJ Lett to score. 

Bryant Pybus (1-0) went the distance and scored the win for the Mountain Lions, while Josh Armbruster (0-1) took the loss for Notre Dame after allowing seven runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings of work. 

Beaver paced the Falcons offensively with four hits on the day, going 4-for-9 with a pair of runs and a RBI. Lett and Fields both added three hits during the twin bill as well, and they both scored three times. 

The Falcons will be in action again on Wednesday, March 25, when they play host to West Liberty in a Mountain East Conference double header at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for a 1 p.m. delivery.
