Sunday sweep

Falcons take two in home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
AVON, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons took both ends of a twin bill in their home opener on Sunday afternoon at All Pro Freight Stadium, with 6-3, and 4-2 victories over Glenville State.

For the Falcons (2-2, 2-0 MEC) the victories came just a few days after dropping a pair of hard fought battles against No. 2 Southern Indiana, while the losses for Glenville State (2-8, 2-4 MEC) give them four in six games in MEC action.

Notre Dame was opportunistic in the first contest, scoring six times on only five hits, and they capitalized on a pair of three-run frames to erase an early 2-0 deficit to come away with the win, and in game two, NDC scored the first three runs of the game and never looked back.

Game One
Glenville State jumped on the board early, plating two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning, which was highlighted by a RBI double from Randal Baugher.

The Falcons were relatively silent, until posting a three-run third inning to take the lead. The bases were loaded, when Blake Miller delivered a game tying, two-run single, plating TJ Lett and Travis Smetana. Later in the inning, Notre Dame executed a double steal, as Keifer Quick stole third, Miller stole second, and Quick came home on the play to give NDC a 3-2 lead.

The Pioneers tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, on a run scoring single from Heath Swisher, but the Falcons answered with a trio of runs in the home half to pull away.

Smetana started the rally with a walk, before Quick singled to center and Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bryan Blondeaux followed with a RBI single to right field, and Shane DeFranco capped the big inning with a two-run single to left.

Zack LaRocca (1-0) scored the victory for Notre Dame, after allowing just three runs on five hits over five innings while fanning four, and Jeff Stover (1) secured the save by tossing pair of scoreless innings of no-hit relief.

Game Two
Notre Dame scored three times in the first two innings to take the early lead, and got the first run in the bottom of the first inning, without recording a hit. Smetana walked with one out before making his way to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Smith reached on a two-out error by the shortstop, and Smetana scored on the play.

In the second, NDC scored twice on a pair of hits, while capitalizing on an error as well. Austin Barnhart reached on a one out single, before making his way to second on a passed ball. Jalen Fields followed with a RBI single to right to give NDC a 2-0 lead. A wild pitch placed fields on second, then he made his way to third on an error by the catcher, before scoring on the back end of a double steal.

Notre Dame added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, as Lett scored on a passed ball. The Pioneers plated runs in the sixth and seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Zach Gresch (1-0) allowed just a run on four hits while fanning five over six strong innings in a winning effort, while Phil Ramos (1) secured the save, after allowing a run on two hits in the seventh.

Quick paced the Falcons offensively, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, and both Miller and DeFranco knocked in two runs each for NDC.

The Falcons will finish their series with the Pioneers, with a pair of games at All Pro Freight Stadium on Monday, March 16, at Noon. There will be NO ADMITTANCE to either games, as they are closed to the public.
