Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va -- For the second time in three seasons, the Notre Dame College men's soccer team earned a berth to the Mountain East Conference Championship game, squaring off with top-seeded Charleston on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons fought for the entirety of the Championship match, but ultimately fell short by a final score of 2-0.
Facing a familiar foe, the Falcons came into the match with an aggressive offensive mindset. NDC pushed the tempo on offense, looking to create shot opportunities early and often against the Golden Eagles.
At the same time, NDC's defense stood tall in front of goalkeeper
Daniel Nagy, limiting the Golden Eagles to just three shot attempts in the first half. The Falcons won the shot advantage, attempting five of their own in the first half, but were unable to capitalize.
At halftime, the score remained knotted at 0-0. Not only did the Falcons outshoot Charleston 5-3 in the first half, but they also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks, proving to be aggressive on offense.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles began to find a rhythm on offense. However, Nagy made saves early in the half to keep the score tied at zero and the Falcons in the game.
Then in the 71st minute, Charleston attempted a penalty kick and converted the attempt, taking a 1-0 lead over the Falcons.
With time winding down in regulation, the Falcons attempted to make a last-minute push on offense, but couldn't create many scoring opportunities. Charleston scored an insurance goal in the 87th minute to take a 2-0 lead, and held on to win by the same score.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 13-6 on the season. NDC will now wait until Monday night's NCAA Tournament Selection Show to see if they will earn a berth to the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
