Falcons finish 2015 season with 60-20 victory

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons brought their 2015 season to a close on Saturday afternoon, as they clobbered West Virginia Wesleyan, 60-20 at Mueller Field, and set a program record for most points in a game.

The Falcons (5-6, 5-5 MEC) closed out the season with victories in four of their final five games, and the win marks the third year in a row that they've ended the season with a victory, while the loss for the Bobcats (2-8, 2-8 MEC) was their third in as many games against the Falcons.

Notre Dame tallied 609 yards of total offense, and while they scored four of their seven touchdowns through the air, they did a lot of damage on the ground, as they ran for 358 yards on the afternoon.

Malik Grove had another huge day for the Falcons, as he set a new program record with six touchdowns (two rushing, four passing) on a day where he threw for 251 yards and ran for 93 yards.

It all began on Notre Dame's opening drive, as they went 70 yards on 10 plays, and scored on a two-yard touchdown pass from Grove go Mitchell Shegos. After forcing the Bobcats to turn it over on downs on their next possession, the Falcons marched down the field and settled for three on a 24-yard field goal from Kyle Kaplan to take a 9-0 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter.

The Falcons forced the Bobcats to punt on their next possession, and scored again, using the Grove to Shegos connection, this time on a 36-yard scoring strike to give NDC a 16-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter.

West Virginia Wesleyan drove right down the field on their very next drive, scoring on a 15-yard touchdown pass at the end of a quick, three play, 77-yard drive to cut the deficit back to ten (16-6) after a missed extra point. On the ensuing drive, Notre Dame scored again on the first play from scrimmage, as Grove threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Smith, to put the Falcons ahead, 23-6.

Keshun Horton blocked West Virginia Wesleyan's punt attempt at the beginning of the second quarter, and Notre Dame capitalized on the very next play, as Grove took a 12-yard dash to pay dirt to give NDC a 30-6 advantage.

The next drive for the Falcons was their first of two 90-yard scoring drives. This drive took them 16 plays, and Kyle Perkins caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Grove to make it 37-6 with 8:40 left in the half.

The Bobcats would score one final time in the first half, on the first of two Michael Anderson touchdown runs, this one from eight yards out to cut the NDC lead to 37-12, which was the final count at the half.

Notre Dame was relentless in the second half, especially on defense where they outscored the Bobcats' offense, 8-6 in the second half.

The Falcons scored their first six points of the second half at the end of another 90-yard drive, as Grove ran it in from 13-yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the day, putting NDC ahead, 44-12 with 2:45 left in the third quarter.

Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Anton Vrebac's punt pinned the Bobcats inside their own one yard line, and on the very next play, Zach Chatlain and Jake Chestnut wrapped up WVWC running back Maurice Williams in the end zone for a safety.

After the free kick, Notre Dame went 40 yards on six plays, and DJ Greene found the end zone on a four yard touchdown rush. The touchdown was his 12th of the season on the ground, establishing a new program record.

Chatlain scored again for the Falcons on Wesleyan's next drive. The Bobcats tried an option pitch on third down, but they botched the pitch, and Chatlain picked up the loose ball, then returned it 25 yards for a touchdown for NDC's fourth defensive touchdown of the season.

WVWC scored one final time, on Anderson's nine-yard touchdown rush with 5:30 remaining.

Notre Dame had six sacks on the day, setting a new program record for sacks in a season with 36. Darius James had a phenomenal finish to his career, as he came away with seven tackles, including three sacks, and ended his career as the program's all-time leader in sacks with 23.

Chatlain tallied 10 tackles on the day, giving him 118 on the season, the second most in a single season in program history. Notre Dame also had two interceptions on the day, as Aykee Henderson and Tyrel Hill both picked off passes.

In addition, the Falcons set another program record defensively, as they registered 10 tackles for a loss, giving them 79 on the season, seven more than last year's record setting total.

Greene had a huge game on the ground for the Falcons, rushing for 162 yards and a touchdown, giving him 1,132 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season, marking the third time that at Falcon has rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season. By rushing for 358 yards, the Falcons set another program record, as they rushed for 2,075 yards on the season, breaking the 2012 record of 1,874.

Grove completed 16-of-23 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns on the day, and Shegos caught seven of those passes for 81 yards and a pair of scores, while Emmanuel Smith went over the century mark with three grabs for 101 yards and a touchdown.
