Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College men's soccer team played host to the visiting Charleston Golden Eagles on Thursday afternoon at Mueller Field in a Mountain East Conference showdown. The Falcons fell short against No. 5 Charleston, dropping a narrow contest by a final score of 3-2.
The game between both sides was a tale of two halves as the Golden Eagles won the first half. Despite both teams being knotted at 6-6 in shots, it was the Golden Eagles who were able to capitalize on their chances.Â
In the 25th minute, Charleston's Will Roberts sent a shot to the top right corner of the net, taking a 1-0 lead over the host Falcons. However, the Falcons continued to push for an equalizing goal on offense, but couldn't convert.
With the first half winding down, the Golden Eagles scored another goal with just 12 seconds before halftime, taking a 2-0 lead going into the break.
After the halftime intermission, the Falcons came out of the gate with a renewed sense of purpose in the second half.Â
NDC continue to push the tempo on offense, looking to create more scoring chances to battle back from the 2-0 deficit. In the 50th minute,
Renan Troccoli scored a goal for the Falcons with an assist from
Declan McGivern, cutting Charleston's lead in half, 2-1.
Trailing by just one, the Falcons' offense was within striking distance. As the second half progressed, neither side was able to create many scoring chances in what was a phsyical game for both sides.
However, NDC broke through again in the 73rd minute. At the 72:22 mark of the game, the Falcons' leading goal-scorer -
Leonardo Paiva - scored yet again for the Falcons, using an assist from
Mikhail Hastings to tie the game at 2-2 with less than 20 minutes to play.
As time continued to wind down on the game clock, both sides looked for a last-minute push to take the lead. However, it was the Golden Eagles who scored the next goal, scoring in the 83rd minute to take a 3-2 lead over NDC.
From there, the Falcons made one last push on offense to tie the game, but fell short in doing so, losing 3-2.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 10-5 on the season, including a 6-4 mark in Mountain East Conference play.Â
The Falcons will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 25 on the road against the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Wheeling, West Virginia.
