Box Score SHEPHERD, W.Va -- The Notre Dame College men's soccer team took to the road on Thursday afternoon, squaring off with the host Shepherd Rams in a Mountain East Conference matchup. The Falcons dominated the contest from start to finish, outshooting the Rams by a 27-4 margin en route to a 2-0 road win.
The Falcons controlled the pace early on in the match, and continued to do so throughout the game. NDC created numerous offensive chances throughout the first half - taking 17 shots total - and finally connected in the final minutes before halftime.
In the 38th minute, the Falcons' leading goal scorer came through as
Leonardo Paiva sniped a shot to the back of the goal, giving NDC a 1-0 lead going into halftime. While the Falcons' offense was clearly impressive in the first half, totaling 17 shots, the defense was equally impressive, limiting the Rams to zero shot attempts.
The second half was much of the same, as the Falcons continued to pepper the Rams goalkeeper with shot attempts. Despite holding just a narrow 1-0 lead over the Rams, the lead felt larger due to the Falcons' stout defensive pressure.
Maintaining their 1-0 advantage, the Falcons offense pushed for an insurance goal in the second half. That insurance goal came midway through the second half in the 64th minute, as Paiva struck again for NDC.
With an assist from
Felipe Silva, Paiva scored yet again for the Falcons, pushing the lead to 2-0 over the host Rams. From there, the Falcons continued to limit shot opportunities for the Rams, outshooting Shepherd 10-4 in the second half and 27-4 in the game.
With the 2-0 win over Shepherd, the Falcons improve to 9-4 on the season, including a 5-3 mark in MEC play.
NDC will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 18 on the road against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
