Falcons beat Wheeling Jesuit at home, 3-0

NDC picks up its third consecutive win with a 3-0 victory over Wheeling

Box Score South Euclid, Ohio -- On a rainy, cloudy and windy Saturday morning, the Notre Dame College Falcons withstood the elements to come away with an impressive 3-0 victory over the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals at Normandy Field.

Playing in their first Mountain East Conference game of the 2014 season, NDC came into the game with the goal of starting conference play off on the right foot. The Falcons wasted no time getting to work, as freshman Alexis Souahy scored his first collegiate goal off a corner kick from senior Chris Fairley just 50 seconds into the match, giving NDC the early 1-0 lead.

With a 1-0 lead in hand, the Falcons looked for more scoring opportunities but found that they didn't have to do anything for their next goal. An own goal by the Cardinals at the 7:20 mark put Wheeling Jesuit in a deeper hole, and also gave the Falcons a steady 2-0 lead early in the match.

Physical play was the theme for much of the first half - and the game - and while both sides battled for momentum, the Falcons went into the halftime break with the same 2-0 lead in hand.

In the second half, the Cardinals pressed to cut the deficit and make it a one-score game, but the Falcons defense stood tall and strong, refusing to allow a goal. Sophomore Spencer Semple matched his defenses' effort, making three saves on the day to pitch a shutout.

In the 79th minute of action, junior Martin Lange put an end to any comeback attempts by the Cardinals, as he used an assist from senior Adam Mitchell to give the Falcons a commanding 3-0 lead, and ultimately the win.

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 3-1 on the season and have now won three straight games since losing their season opener to Mercyhurst University. The Falcons will next compete on Wednesday, Sept. 17 on the road in Charleston, West Virginia against the host Charleston Golden Eagles.
