Box ScoreERIE, Pa. -- After earning an at-large berth to the 2014 NCAA Tournament, the Notre Dame College men's soccer team took to the road to face Mercyhurst University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. After allowing an early goal to the host Lakers, the Falcons showed resilience and fought to tie the game, but fell just short by a final score of 1-0.Â
The game between the NDC and MU was a rematch of both sides' 2014 season opener, in which the Lakers won by a score of 4-1. While the rematch was much lower scoring, it was even higher stakes and higher intensity.
Both sides struggled to find any offensive rhythm early on, leading to an early stalemate. Then, in the 13th minute, MU tracked down a loose ball and a pass from the Lakers' Jack Watson found Sten Marcson, who scored for the early 1-0 advantage.Â
The offensive chances for both sides came few and far between throughout the remainder of the first half, and the Falcons trailed the Lakers 1-0 at the intermission. Both sides combined for just five shots in the first half - four from MU and one from NDC.
In the second half, the offense began to flow for both sides, as they combined for 13 shots at a much more even split - seven for MU and six for NDC. The Falcons also attempted five corner kicks in the second half compared to just one for the Lakers.
However, despite creating more chances and being aggressive on offense, the Falcons couldn't capitalize and fell by a narrow score of 1-0.
With the loss, the Falcons' season comes to an end with a final record of 10-6-2, including a 7-3-2- mark in Mountain East Conference play. The Lakers will advance to face No. 1 Charleston University in the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
