Men's soccer falls to #4 Charleston

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Wednesday afternoon at Mueller Field marked a battle between the top two teams in the Mountain East Conference standings, the 9-0-1 Charleston Golden Eagles and the 8-2-0 Notre Dame Falcons. With both teams jockeying for positioning in the conference and regional standings, the Falcons fell short against the Golden Eagles, losing by a final score of 3-1.

Squaring off against a Charleston offense that averages nearly five goals per game, the Falcons defense stood tall early on in the match. However, the Golden Eagles' offense eventually broke through with a goal in the 11th minute, giving the visitors the early 1-0 lead.

Trailing by just one, the Falcons tried to create offensive chances on their own end, but the Golden Eagles defense continued to apply pressure. Charleston began to control ball possession, and found yet another scoring chance in the 22nd minute as Renan Ramos scored to push UC's lead to 2-0.

The Falcons went into the half trailing by two, but came out in the second half with a renewed sense of urgency. NDC pressed to cut the deficit in half, but instead surrendered a third goal in the 51st minute, and Charleston took a 3-0 lead.

But the Falcons refused to simply roll over.

In the 66th minute, freshman Roble Kalif scored his first collegiate goal as he battled a sea of UC defenders to find the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

NDC began to find an offensive rhythm late in the second half, creating numerous close-calls in the Charleston box. However, it was too little, too late for the Falcons offense, as they fell by a final score of 3-1.

With the loss, the Falcons fall to 8-3 on the season, including a 5-2 mark in MEC play.

The Falcons will next compete on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Wheeling Jesuit University. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
