Box Score WHEELING, W.Va -- The Notre Dame College men's soccer team traveled to Wheeling, West Virginia on Saturday for a Mountain East Conference battle with the host Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. After 110 minutes of closely contested action, the Cardinals and Falcons finished tied at one, marking the first tie of the season for NDC.
The Falcons controlled the tempo earlier, and created numerous scoring opportunities with seven shot attempts in the first half. However, the Falcons were unable to score until the very end of the first half, as junior
Ryan Ware scored an unassisted goal in the 44th minute to give NDC a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The second half saw a much more even battle between the two sides, as the Cardinals and Falcons each had five shot attempts in the half.
Despite offensive opportunities for the Cardinals, the Falcons defense stood tall to support sophomore
Spencer Semple in goal.
However, the Cardinals used a last-second goal to tie the game as Luke Roan scored the tying goal with just 23 seconds left in regulation, forcing overtime.Â
In overtime, the Falcons attempted two shots to the Cardinals zero, but were unable to convert on either shot attempt. A scoreless 10 minute frame forced a second overtime, where the offenses again sputtered for each side, leaving the game tied at one after two overtimes.
With the tie, the Falcons are now 8-3-1 on the season, including a 5-2-1 mark in MEC play.
The Falcons will next compete on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at home against West Virginia Wesleyan. The match is schedule to begin at 4 p.m.
