A tale of two halves

Falcons rally in second half to beat Bobcats

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons came from behind to win their first conference game of the season, erasing an early 10-0 deficit, and rallied in the second half for a 34-25 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan at Mueller Field.

The Falcons (2-1) outscored the Bobcats (1-2), 17-6, in the second half, and rallied to remain unbeaten in two games at Mueller Field.

WV Wesleyan took control early on.  After they neutralized a promising NDC drive after the opening kickoff, which stalled at the Bobcat 19 yard line, WV Wesleyan capitalized and stole momentum on their opening drive, which was capped by a 56-yard touchdown pass from Jeremy Mussleman to LaVaughn Huhges.

NDC's ensuing drive was rather quick, lasting just four plays, and the Bobcats took over at their own 35-yard line.  Their drive lasted 11 plays, and went 56 yards, resulting in a 22-yard field goal from Kasper Bernlid with 4:02 to play in the first quarter.

With less than two minutes to play in the first quarter, Mo May picked off a Mussleman pass and took it down to the WV Wesleyan 10-yard line, and the Falcons found the end zone just a few plays later, when Ray Russ threw his first of four touchdown passes on the day, with a six yard strike to tight end Ray J. Brown.

The Bobcats answered a few minutes later, as they forced the Falcons to turn the ball over on downs near midfield, and brief, four play, 54-yard drive on a nine yard touchdown scramble from Mussleman, his second of three TD's on the day.

Kyle Kaplan brought the Falcons back within striking distance, when he hit his first of two field goals on the day, nailing a 23-yard field goal with 8:22 left in the half.  WV Wesleyan answered about four minutes later on a 25-yard field goal from Bernlid, before the Falcons found the end zone one more time before the end of the half.

With less than two minutes remaining in the opening half, Russ found Jack Foy on a seven yard touchdown pass, to cap an eight-play, 59-yard drive with 1:37 to go, bringing NDC back within two (19-17).

The Falcons took their first lead of the game in the third quarter.  Kaplan's second field goal of the day split the uprights from 22 yards out, to put the Falcons in front, 20-19, with 6:39 to play in the third quarter.

NDC's defense then forced another turnover, as Michael Fields intercepted Mussleman near midfield, and the Falcons scored a few plays later when Russ found DaJunn Graham on a 24-yard touchdown pass to give the Falcons a 27-19 lead.

The Bobcats were able to draw a little closer with less than two minutes left in the third quarter, when Mussleman found Connor Arlia on a 25-yard touchdown pass.  The Bobcats went for two, but the conversion failed, and the Falcons led 27-25 after three quarters.

Notre Dame was able to put the game away with a drive that began at the 9:29-mark in the fourth quarter.  The Falcons marched down the field on a 10 play, 86-yard drive, that finished with a nine yard touchdown pass from Russ to Foy.

Russ had a huge day for NDC, completing 32-of-56 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns.  Foy led all NDC receivers with an incredible, 15-catch performance, for 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Pedro Powell paced the NDC ground game with 173 yards rushing on 33 carries.

The Falcons are in action again next Saturday, when they square off against Charleston (W.Va.) in an MEC road tilt.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
