Falcons score first victory in big comeback

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Notre Dame Falcons rallied to score their first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, as they split a pair of games on the final day of play at the Vulcan Invitational.

The Falcons (1-7) rallied from an 0-2 deficit in their first contest of the day, and won the final three sets to take a 3-2 decision over Davis and Elkins.  NDC fell in their final contest of the day, in a 3-0 loss against Long Island Post. 

In their first match, Davis and Elkins took the first two sets, 25-23, and 25-15, before the Falcons took a 25-21 victory to force a fourth set.  In the fourth set, the Falcons went back and forth with D&E, and eventually won, 29-27, and carried that momentum into the final set, which they won, 15-12, to score their first victory of the season.

Notre Dame hit .389 in the final set to score the big win.  Angela Bush had a big match for the Falcons, leading the way with 17 kills and hit .382.  Shelby Regiec led the Falcons with 45 assists in the contest as well, while Brittany Perrott paced the Falcons with 14 digs. 

In their final match of the tournament, Notre Dame fell in three sets to Long Island Post.  The Falcons dropped the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-14. NDC rallied in the final set of the day, but came up just short, in a 25-20 decision. 

Both Lindsay Shirilla and Stephanie Frick led the way for NDC offensively against LIU with seven kills apiece, and Shirilla hit .286 in the contest.  Regiec turned in a 21 assist performance, giving her 66 on the afternoon.  Perrott was once again NDC's leader in digs with eight, and Taylor Thomas came away with four solo blocks. 

The Falcons are in action again on Wednesday, Sept. 18, when then head to Berea, Ohio, for a 7 p.m. contest against Baldwin Wallace.
