PAINSEVILLE, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons surrendered the first 28 points of Saturday's contest against the Lake Erie Storm, and dropped their third road contest of the season, 48-21.
For the Falcons (3-3, 2-2) the loss was their third in a row away from Mueller Field this season, while the victory for Lake Erie (2-4) snapped a brief two game slide, and was their second against the Falcons in as many meetings.
Early on, the Notre Dame offense was silenced, while the Lake Erie offense went to work. The Storm scored on its first four possessions of the contest, and led, 28-0, at the 12:42-mark in the second quarter.Â
Lake Erie quarterback Brendan Gallagher's 56-yard touchdown rush on the Storm's third play from scrimmage set the tone for the afternoon. On their next drive, tailback Anthony Bilal ran it in from three yards out for his first of three touchdowns on the day.Â
Gallagher found Aaron Lindgren on a 22-yard touchdown strike with less than 30 seconds left in the first quarter to put the Storm up, 21-0, before Bilal found paydirt again, this time on a 42-yard rush to give Lake Erie a commanding, 28-0 lead.Â
The Falcons score their only points of the first half, when
Ray Russ found
Mitchell Shegos on a 13-yard touchdown pass, to cap a nine play, 98-yard drive with 5:19 left in the half to narrow the deficit to 21 (28-7).Â
However, Lake Erie stormed in to the end zone twice in the final minute of the first half, to take a 42-7 lead into the locker room at the break. Tommy Jackson caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Gallagher with 49 seconds left, and an interception moments later gave the ball back to the Storm, and they capitalized on Bilal's one-yard touchdown run with eight seconds left.
The second half proved to be more productive for NDC, but the 42-7 halftime difference was too much to overcome. Notre Dame scored first in the second half on
Alec Torgerson's one-yard touchdown rush with 6:47 left in the quarter.Â
Lake Erie scored one final time, on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Gallagher to Shane VanFleteren, and NDC found the end zone one last time with less than a minute to go in the third quarter, as Russ found
Ray J. Brown in the back of the end zone for a four yard touchdown strike.Â
Despite the loss, the NDC offense still racked up 489 yards on 87 plays.Â
Pedro Powell went over the century mark for the fourth week in a row, rushing for 102 yards on 19 carries. Russ completed 27-of-58 passes for a pair of scores, two picks and 319 yards.Â
Jack Foy caught seven passes for 72 yards, and
Mikhail Morgan hauled in seven passes for 102 yards.
The Falcons are in action again next week, for another road contest. They will take on the No. 12 Rams, of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va., on Saturday, Oct. 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
