LYNDHURST, Ohio- The Notre Dame Falcons won an overtime thriller on Sunday afternoon, defeating Northwood, 4-3 in double overtime for their third straight victory.
The Falcons (6-1, 3-1 GLIAC) have now won three in a row, since their 22-game winning streak was snapped against Ohio Dominican. The loss for the Timberwolves of Northwood (3-2-1, 3-2 GLIAC) was their second in a row.
In the first period, the Timberwolves of Northwood netted a goal in the sixth minute by freshman forward Sam Nair giving the T'Wolves an early 1-0 lead. Midfielder Arjun Jung was credited on the assist. That goal gave Nair his fifth goal of the year. Northwood's Sam Nair netted his second goal on the day off the rebound at the 7:48-mark giving him number six on the year making the score 2-0.
The Falcons answered back at the 24:40-mark in the first half, when senior
Erik Beattie netted his fourth goal of the week, cutting the deficit in half (2-1). Beattie was assisted by senior forward
Dean Miller. The Falcons followed that with another quick strike three minutes when
Dean Miller booted a low shot goal to the back of the net in the left corner, his first of the season in the 18th minute, tying the game at two apiece.
In the second period, the Falcons took their first lead in the 52nd minute. Beattie found the net for his second goal of the day, giving him five on the year, which provided the Falcons with a 3-2 advantage. Northwood answered with a game tying goal in the 60th minute when sophomore midfielder Jack Smith hit a right lower corner shot at the net. Smith's goal was his third of the season, and Sam Nair was credited on the assist.
In the second overtime,
Elliot Kelly netted the game winning goal in the 103rd minute to defeat Northwood 4-3 in double overtime.
The Falcons outshot Northwood 30-14 in the game.
The Falcons will travel to Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) for their next match, on Friday, September 28th. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
