Panthers halve their way

Ohio Dominican comes on strong in second half, beats NDC, 45-7

Box Score
LYNDHURST, Ohio -- Notre Dame had its losing streak extended by a strong Ohio Dominican squad, as the Panthers downed the Falcons, 45-7, on Saturday night.

NDC and ODU were knotted at 0-0 through 28 minutes of play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Korb Field.  But the Panthers (5-3, 4-3 GLIAC) scored before the end of the first half and then went wild in the third quarter, outscoring the Falcons, 24-0.

With the loss the Falcons (1-7, 0-7) have now lost seven straight games since winning their season opener on Aug. 30.

Having tallied 500-plus yards in four of its last five games, ODU came into the contest with its offense running on all cylinders.  That Panther offense was held to just 183 total yards in the first half, but the visitors exploded for 258 yards in the third quarter en route to winning for the third time in their last four games.

Notre Dame running back Pedro Powell hit a milestone for the Falcons during the course of action -- the junior from Liberty, Ohio, became the first NDC player to register 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.

After an exchange of punts amid solid defense for 28 minutes of football, Ohio Dominican got on the board first when the Panthers marched 80 yards in a drive that took place within two minutes of halftime.  When ODU's Brandon Schoen dove over the goal line at the 38-second mark in the second quarter, his touchdown capped off the drive and broke a scoreless tie.

The Panthers went into halftime with a 7-0 lead after the two sides combined for just 17 first downs and 332 yards in the first 30 minutes of action.  Each team punted four times in a first half of solid possession football, free of turnovers and mostly devoid of penalties.

For Notre Dame's defense, holding an opponent to seven points marked the team's best first-half performance since Oct. 15, 2011, when the Falcons held Ave Maria (Fla.) scoreless for three quarters.

The seven-point deficit didn't hold for long once the second half got underway.  On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Brandon Schoen bolted around the right end of the Panther line and all the way down the sideline and into the end zone for a 69-yard TD run.

Leading 14-0, Ohio Dominican then forced the first turnover of the game when cornerback Billy Eakins intercepted an NDC pass on the Falcons' next possession.  The Panthers capitalized, netting seven more points on a TD pass and extra point, and by the 11:41-mark, Notre Dame's fine first-half defensive effort had fizzled into a 21-point deficit.

Ohio Dominican went on to score 10 more points in the third quarter, on a TD and a field goal.  By the end of that third frame, the Panthers had outgained the Falcons, 258 yards to 23.

ODU added a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.  Notre Dame got its lone score at the 2:03-mark in the fourth when James Flowers found Colton Wallace on a 13-yard.  Flowers started the game at quarterback for the Falcons who played without the services of an injured Ray Russ on Saturday.  Russ had started each of Notre Dame's first seven games this season.

Flowers and the Falcons were held to just 233 total yards in the game -- 114 on the ground and 119 in the air.  Pedro Powell rushed for 77 yards on 22 carries.  Flowers went 18-for-37 for 119 yards.

ODU finished the game with 513 total yards; the Panthers rushed for 289 yards and passed for 235.  Brandon Schoen rushed for 119 yards and two TDs.  Quarterback Mark Miller went 14-of-21 for 235 yards.  Dez Stewart was on the receiving end of 143 of those yards; Stewart had five catches in the game.
