Falcons defeat Malone advance to final

Lange and Beattie lead NDC to 17th straight

LYNDHURST, Ohio – The Notre Dame dominated from the opening kickoff to defeat Malone 2-0 in the semifinals of the Ohio Independent Championships at Korb Field on Thursday evening. (Box)
 
Freshman forward Martin Lange scored – his 13th goal of the season -- in the 23rd minute to put the Falcons in the lead. Erik Beattie got the play started when brought down on the edge of the box. Tom Owens took the ensuing free kick finding Lange.
 
Erik Beattie scored – his 12th goal of the season – in the 77th minute to put the game away, guaranteeing Notre Dame their seventh straight win over Malone.
 
For the game the Falcons outshot the visiting Pioneers 33-11 but only held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Blue & White also held a 10-4 lead in corners.
 
With the win, Notre Dame advance to Saturday's OIC Championship against Walsh who defeated Cedarville 2-1. The Falcons secured their 35th consecutive regular season win and kept their scoring streak alive. The Falcons have now scored in 80 straight contests dating back to Sept. 12, 2008.
 
Senior goalkeeper Alex Klein earned his seventh win of the season and his 19th career shutout. That mark now stands as a program best, passing Chris Logan for first place.
 
Senior defender Dan Knight played in his 82nd career game, tying the Abergele, Wales, native with Steven Kane for fourth in program history. Knight also moved up the career list in games started (80), tying Andy Carr, Shane Clegg, Kevin McDowall, and Jonathan Morris for fourth place. Jacob Child holds the all-time games started and played marks with 85, set in the Falcons National Championship Finals appearance last season.
