Falcons foiled in finale

Urbana downs NDC, 32-0

LYNDHURST, Ohio -- Notre Dame dropped its season finale on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons lost, 32-0, to Urbana at Korb Field. (Box)

The NDC offense was limited to a season-low 126 yards of total offense on a day when the Falcons struggled to move the ball and, at times, even hang onto it. Notre Dame fumbled the ball five times and was a minus-5 in turnover margin, their worst single-game mark of the season. Urbana capitalized on the Falcon mistakes; the Blue Knights (5-6) strung together one rushing touchdown, three passing TDs and one defensive TD on the afternoon.

With the loss, Notre Dame ends its inaugural season with a 2-9 mark. The Falcons closed out their first season with a five-game losing streak.

The Falcons and Blue Knights played a scoreless first quarter, and Urbana broke the 0-0 tie at 8:57 in the second, when senior running back Josh Turnbo found the end zone on a 2-yard run. UU scored again just before halftime to extend their lead to 12-0 (the Blue Knights failed on both conversions, once on a run attempt and once on a blocked kick).

In the second half, Urbana scored twice on long plays, once on a 35-yard interception return and once on a 30-yard touchdown pass. The Blue Knights wrapped up the 32-0 shutout with a fifth TD early in the fourth; UU converted points on just one of their five scores.

For the game, the visitors pounded out 165 yards on the ground and 242 through the air. The Blue Knights' aerial assault was impressive in its efficiency -- they tallied their 24 yards on 28-of-35 passing. Dual signal callers did the damage for Urbana, with DJ Mendenhall (16-of-19) and Evan Gehlert (12-of-16) splitting snaps under center. They both managed to find receivers Matt Hightower and Jerrell Leak on numerous occasions -- Hightower and Leak combined for 17 receptions and 180 yards on the afternoon. Turnbo was the Blue Knights' top rusher; he finished with 66 yards on 12 carries.

Notre Dame was paced by freshman running back #Pedro Powell#, who garnered 74 rushing yards on 19 carries. The Falcon offense produced 70 yards on the ground and 56 through the air. Sophomore wide receiver #Derrick Paster# was NDC's top target in the passing game -- he hauled in five passes totaling 39 yards. The Notre Dame offense stalled in the clutch, going just 1-for-12 on third downs in what became a one-sided affair in the team's final appearance at Korb Field this year.

Defensively, NDC was led by freshman safety #Bo Grunder# (10 tackles) and sophomore defensive end #Bob Hansen# (eight tackles, one sack).
