Box Score AUBURNDALE, FL – Striking out a program record 20 batters, the Notre Dame College baseball team (2-9) tossed a gem against nationally ranked Grand Valley State University (7-3) on Friday during the Falcons the final day in Florida. Sophomore
Guy Young led the way with a career-high 11 punch outs over 4.2 innings pitched, tied for the third-most strikeouts in NDC program history.
Starting pitcher
Johnny Anservitz kicked off the contest for Notre Dame, twirling 3.1 innings pitched, allowing one run on zero hits to go with seven strikeouts.
The Falcons broke the stalemate during the top of the second inning, as
Devon Morris poked a lead-off single to right field. A few batters later, NDC had the bases loaded after
Johnny Costella walked and
Carson Petrecca beat out an infield single. Next,
Aaron Miranda drove home Morris with an RBI walk (1-0).
GVSU evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on a bases loaded hit by pitch. After a Falcon pitching change, Young closed out the frame for NDC, stranding three Lakers on bases after a pair of punchouts.
Notre Dame quickly regained the lead during the top of the fifth inning, as
Jacob Barker reached base on an error to begin a two-out rally. In the very next at-bat, Petrecca brought Barker home on an RBI single to right center (2-1).
Once again, Grand Valley State knotted the game at 2-2 during the home half of the frame, on an RBI double to right field.
However, the Falcons pounced on the Lakers in the top of the sixth inning, producing five runs on three hits, including batting around in the order. In fact, Notre Dame did all of their damage with two outs in the inning, as
Hudson Wesney scored on a
Caden Gomes RBI single to right (3-2). Following a GVSU pitching change, Costella came around to score on a wild pitch after reaching base via walk (4-2). After another Laker pitching change, Petrecca generated a two-run single, scoring Miranda and Gomes (6-2).
Nate Miller capped off the inning for NDC with an RBI single to left field, allowing Barker to touch home plate (7-2).
The contest remained scoreless until GVSU pushed a runner across in the bottom of the ninth inning (7-3).
On the mound, the aforementioned Young posted a career-day by tossing 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits to go with 11 strikeouts and three walks, en route to his team-leading second win of the season.
Alex Dicke took over for Young in the ninth inning, allowing zero runs on one hit, to go with a pair of strikeouts. As a unit, Anservitz (7), Young (11) and Dicke (2), combined to shatter the NDC program record for strikeouts in a game. Previously sitting at 16 against Mercyhurst on Mar. 29, 2022, this trio of Falcons combined for 20 punchouts and only four hits allowed against the No. 22 team in the country.
Offensively, the Falcons were led by Gomes perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate, including a double. Petrecca joined in on the action with a pair of hits (2-for-3), a pair of walks and a game-high three RBI. Gomes, Miranda and Miller also drove home an RBI apiece for NDC.
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday Mar. 12 as the Falcons return home to host Walsh University at Mercy Health Stadium beginning at 3 p.m.
