Box Score ERIE, Pa. – An unseasonably warm Friday afternoon in February gave way to Opening Day for the Notre Dame College baseball team at Mercyhurst University. The Falcons fell to the Lakers 16-0 in nine innings.
The Falcons flashed the leather in the first inning, as
Tyler Shadle erased a runner trying to steal second base to record the first out. Despite MU loading the bases later in the frame, pitcher
Johnny Anservitz rolled an inning ending double, with
Caden Gomes and
Carson Petrecca receiving help from first baseman
Jacob Barker.
In the second inning, Notre Dame threatened with runners at the corners as a Petrecca walk and Laker error on a
Hudson Wesney batted ball set up the Falcons. However, MU worked their way out of the jam to hold the contest scoreless after the top of the second.
In the home half of the inning, Mercyhurst broke the stalemate with a two-run home run to right field (2-0).
Notre Dame produced hits during the third, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, however the Laker pitching staff held the Falcons at bay.
Mercyhurst added runs during the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, to defeat NDC 16-0.
Five Falcons recorded singles on the day in Gomes, Shadle, Wesney,
Aaron Miranda and
Nate Miller.
On the mound, Miller recorded his first career outing, tallying an inning of scoreless relief.
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action for the home opener on Friday Feb. 16 at 11:30 a.m. in Avon, Ohio against the University of Indianapolis.
