Baseball to play home opener, despite more schedule changes

This Week: The Notre Dame College baseball team hosts a pair of Mountain East Conference foes at Mercy Health Stadium in Avon, Ohio. First, the Falcons entertain Concord University on Sunday Mar. 26 beginning at 1 p.m. Next, NDC squares off against Glenville State University on Monday Mar. 27 with first pitch at 1 p.m. Traditional MEC doubleheader format will be played.
 
Schedule Change: The doubleheader against Concord has been pushed back from Saturday to Sunday, and the two games against Glenville State have been moved from Sunday to Monday.
 
Records: NDC begins the week at 1-12 (1-3 MEC), while CU is 8-11 (4-0 MEC) and GSU sits at 8-13 (1-3 MEC).
 
Coaches Corner: Len Barker is in his 12th season at the helm of the NDC baseball program for the 2022 season. Barker has a career record of 227-281. Trent Abernathy and Austin Southcott lead the Concord baseball team. James Mullins is currently in his ninth season with Glenville State, holding a career record of 126-220.
 
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll.
 
Series History: The Falcons are 10-15 all-time when facing the Mountain Lions, dating back to their first meeting in 2012, and including the series split last season. Notre Dame maintains a 15-6 all-time record against Glenville State, dating back to their first meeting in 2014, and including the three meetings last year. The two sides split during the regular season, before the Pioneers bested the Falcons 9-5 in the MEC Tournament.
 
Noting the Falcons: Most recently, Notre Dame began conference play on the road at Davis & Elkins and WV Wesleyan. The Falcons earned a split with D&E, winning 7-1, before falling 3-2. The next day, NDC fell 5-4 during both contests with WVWC.
 
Redshirt sophomore Maximilian Schweiger leads the Notre Dame offense with his .333 batting average, ranking 12th in the MEC. Schweiger also posts team-highs in OPS (.881), slugging (.481), on-base percentage (.400), doubles (4), RBI (5) and total bases (13).
 
Freshman Devon Minney touts a .310 batting average, and is also second on the team in OPS (.665), on-base percentage (.355), slugging (.310), hits (9) and RBI (4).
 
The likes of Hayden Parker, Nate Miller and Johnny Costella have come on strong as of late for NDC, boasting multiple RBI.
 
As a team, Notre Dame holds a slash line of .199/.294/.249 (BA/OBP/SLG), to go with 34 runs scored, 10 doubles, one triple, and one home run.
 
On the mound, redshirt junior Johnny Anservitz leads the squad in innings pitched (17.0) and strikeouts (15), as reliever Danny Brammer leads the Falcons pitching staff in ERA (1.80), WHIP (1.00) and opponent batting average (.158).
 
As a unit, NDC posts a 12.86 ERA, 2.52 WHIP, .347 opponent batting average, to go with 53 strikeouts and 91 walks allowed.
 
Noting the Mountain Lions: Last week, Concord kicked off conference play with a 4-0 record. First CU defeated Frostburg State 9-5 and 9-7, before toppling Fairmont State 6-5 and 4-3.
 
D.J. Christian leads a potent CU offense with a .418 batting average, ranking second in the MEC. Christian ranks third in the league with a .515 on-base percentage, and is tied for fifth in doubles (6).
 
Josh Adkins provides pop for the Mountain Lions, ranking third in the MEC with five home runs, and tied for seventh with 15 RBI.
 
As a whole, Concord posts a slash line of .292/.367/.444, to go with 100 runs scored, 33 doubles, five triples and 14 home runs.
 
On the hill, CU packs a one-two punch in starters Andrew Neff and Eddie Blake. Neff leads the team in ERA (4.33), WHIP (1.30), innings pitched (35.1) and strikeouts (44). Blake also posts an ERA under 5.00 (4.86), as he has sent down 31 batters and walked seven.
 
As a whole, Concord maintains an 8.44 ERA, 1.84 WHIP, .323 opponent batting average, to go with 141 strikeouts and 68 walks allowed.
 
Noting the Pioneers: Last week, Glenville State began their 2023 conference season with a 1-3 record. On Saturday, GSU fell to Fairmont State 6-4, before rebounding to win 3-2 in game two. On Monday, the Pioneers fell during both contests with Frostburg State 17-4 and 3-2.
 
Glenville State is paced by a balanced offensive attack as Carlos De Jesus leads all qualified players with a .245 batting average and four doubles. Zach Morris has a team-high nine RBI, while Fabian Escalante has deposited a team-high three home runs.
 
In addition, Brandon Layne owns a .357 batting average, .455 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage over 12 games played.
 
As a unit, GSU slashes .196/.326/.306, to go with 61 runs scored, 23 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs.
 
On the bump, Chase Swain is the team's top arm, pitching in 24.2 innings this season. Swain posts the most punchouts on the staff with 31.
 
Coby Howatineck provides quality relief for the Pioneers, appearing in 13 games this year and maintaining a 4.70 ERA. Howatineck flashes 13 strikeouts and two walks allowed.
 
As a pitching staff, Glenville State carries a 5.56 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, .275 opponent batting average, to go with 163 strikeouts and 84 walks allowed.
