SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Over the past two weeks on the home turf, Notre Dame continued its undefeated season. The Falcons defeated Kutztown University, 19-7, on Oct. 14 and Southern Virginia University, 78-7, on Oct. 21.
Notre Dame hosted Kutztown for what was setting up to be an incredible game in the rain. The Falcons started the game with the kick-off and within a few minutes, Kutztown made a break to the edge of the field and had a scoring opportunity. However, a try saving tackle was made and it resulted in a goal line drop out. The game was very back-and-forth with a lot of set pieces in the opening 10 minutes. Fourteen minutes into the game, points were finally put on the scoreboard for the Falcons. Winger
Killian Burns slotted a penalty kick and the Falcons were up, 3-0.
A few minutes later, KU received a penalty within kicking distance for them. They decide to go for the poles but were unsuccessful with the attempt. The rest the first half was slow, with multiple set pieces and penalties. In the 31st minute, Notre Dame College received another penalty and decided to kick. The kick was successful and the Falcons led Kutztown, 6-0. Again, only three minutes later, NDC received another penalty and decided to kick again and they were successful taking the lead to 9-0 by end of the first half.
The start of the second half was very kick heavy for multiple minutes, followed by multiple set pieces. The Falcons drove Kutztown back to their own territory and were heavy on the pressure. Eventually, the Kutztown defence was broken and NDC scored the first try of the game to lead, 16-0. Kutztown started to gain some momentum in the later stages of the second half, but NDC was well equipped to stop the attacking attempts of the Golden Bears. The 60-minute mark rolled by and NDC had, yet again, received a penalty and decided to take their shot at goal. The Falcons were successful and took their lead to 19-0.
Kutztown built momentum after consecutive penalties from NDC in the end stages of the game and that allowed them to secure a scrum, leading to a try scored and converted kick. NDC would win by a score of 19-7.
NDC had a slow start to the Southern Virginia matchup, kicking three points after SVU committed a penalty and Lachlan McDonald converted. The Falcons started to pick up the pace, creating a scoring opportunity that was finished by
Xavier Allen and converted by McDonald. Notre Dame led, 10-0. SVU came back with some fire to score underneath the post, making the score, 10-7. Following work from a good kick chase, Notre Dame's
Asher Hannon steps around two players and scores a try. Immediately after, NDC made a line break from the kick-off and
Stephan Herbst dove over the line for five points. McDonald made the two points and NDC led, 24-7. A set piece moved from a scrum in the middle of the field, allowing Allen to score in the right corner for his second try and NDC's fourth. The conversion was missed, leaving the game at 29-7. Again, with another line break from kick-off, McDonald makes ground up the field with
Joevon McCoy supporting to score under the posts. NDC finishing the half, 36-7.
NDC started fast in the second half with Allen scoring his hat trick in the right corner. Following this, McDonald made the conversion, putting another seven points on SVU. NDC worked its way back up the field and mauled over the line with
Christian Gatica, making the score, 50-7. After creating some phases in SVU's 22,
Cameron Mills found a gap and scored under the post making it easy for McDonald's conversion (57-7). NDC worked Southern Virginia side-to-side bringing it in to forward
Tanner Smith.
Tomas Rojas took over kicking duties and made the two points. NDC kept dominating,. SVU conceded two penalties for the Falcons to work up the field and create a scrum on their 5-meter line. Tadiwa Kainga picked up from 8-man and dots it down for five.
Tomas Rojas put it over the two, making the score, 71-7. A bit of back-and-forth kicking, NDC had a catch-and-return from 80 meters with a strong run from
Stephan Herbst down the left sideline to score his second try. Rojas put the last points though the post and the final score was 78-7.
NDC dominated SVU on the day, scoring 11 tries and converting after 10 of them.
Notre Dame will travel to play Navy, on Oct. 28, with a scheduled start time of 12 p.m.
