NDC men’s rugby attempts to bring home first national title since 2016-17

HOUSTON, Tex. – Notre Dame College rugby is beginning to call Houston its second home. The host site of this season's national championship games saw NDC's women's rugby finish as the national runner-up, last weekend, and will have NDC's men's team playing St. Bonaventure, at Aveva Stadium on Dec. 9.

Notre Dame College men's rugby has had one of the most successful seasons in program history. After losing at least five matches in each of the past two years, NDC has put together an 8-1-1 record so far in the fall 2023 campaign. The last time the Falcons had one loss, or fewer, in a season was 2016. That year, Notre Dame also went undefeated at home, as they did this year.

The only loss for the Falcons this fall came against Navy, on Oct. 28, a game in which NDC was leading at halftime. They also tied with Army, on the road, but would win six regular season games, including three D1A East conference matches. To end the regular season, Notre Dame hosted St. Bonaventure and won by a score of 28-19.

In the quarterfinal round of the National Collegiate Rugby Division I playoffs, No. 2 NDC defeated No. 5 Siena College, 50-0, on Nov. 18. On Dec. 2, the Falcons did not have much trouble with No. 4 Indiana, winning 26-13, in the semifinal matchup. St. Bonaventure defeated Wheeling University, 26-13, in the quarters and then upset No. 1 Brown, 15-13, in the semis.

Notre Dame's last national championship was won in the 2016-17 campaign. In December of 2016, NDC defeated Bowling Green State University, 39-17, in the D1AA Fall National Title Game. Marcus Tupuola was named MVP of the Match by USA Rugby. The program would also win the 2017 Spring National Championship over the University of California-Davis, a few months later.

Tomorrow's game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast for free on The Rugby Network. To get more information, click here.
