High-powered offenses collide when NDC meets Glenville State and WV State this week

This Week: The Notre Dame College women's soccer team with remain home to host Glenville State University on Wednesday Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. before traveling to face West Virginia State on Sunday Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.
 
Records: NDC begins the week at 5-3-3 (4-3-1 MEC) and in second place in the Mountain East Conference North Division with 13 points. GSU sits at 4-4-3 (2-4-2 MEC) and in fourth place in the MEC South Division with eight points. WV State sits at 6-4-1 (5-2-1 MEC) and in third place in the MEC South Division with 16 points.
 
Coaches Corner: Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels headlines the Notre Dame women's soccer program for his 21st season at the helm. Shiels carries a 199-129-37 career record, to go along with three MEC Tournament championships and four MEC Coach of the Year honors. J.R. Dodson is in his third season as the head coach of Glenville State, as Brandon Slewa enters his first season at the helm of West Virginia State.
 
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked nationally according to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) poll.
 
Series History: Notre Dame is 4-0 all-time when facing Glenville State, dating back to their first meeting in 2018 and including NDC's 7-0 victory last season. The Falcons are 0-2 all-time when playing WV State, dating back to their first meeting in 2021, and including the Yellow Jackets 1-0 win on Mueller Field last year.
 
Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame dropped a tough road contest at No. 14 Charleston, 2-1. The Falcons responded with a strong second half on Sunday to defeat Davis & Elkins, 3-1. Junior Louisa Follert set the NDC program record with three assists in the match, as she found junior Miriam Szijarto twice, along with senior Madison Marino.
 
Szijarto powers the Notre Dame College offense on the year, leading the team and the Mountain East Conference with nine goals scored. The Ravenna, Ohio native ranks tied for 12th in the country in goals scored. In addition, the Archbishop Hoban High School product has tallied 20 points on the season, ranking second in the MEC and tied for 18th in the country.
 
NDC welcomed Follert back into action this week, as her impact was immediately felt. Upon setting the NDC program record for assists in a match, the junior now leads the Falcons in assists (4), followed by Sophia Motolese with three.
 
Sophomores Mia Maurna (3) and Savannah Singh (2) add multiple goals for the Falcons offense.
 
In goal, senior Jordan Pasalaqua ranks fourth in the MEC in save percentage (0.797), and saves per game (4.64), while being fifth in goals against average (1.238). The Madison, Ohio native has surrendered 13 goals on 121 shots faced, to go with 51 saves.
 
As a team, Notre Dame posts 1.91 goals per game on 15.1 shots per game. NDC has scored 21 goals on 19 assists (t-21st in DII) and 45 corner kicks.
 
Noting the Pioneers: Last week, Glenville State drew West Liberty 1-1 on the road Wednesday, before turning around to beat Fairmont State 4-3 on Sunday.
 
Similar to NDC's Szijarto, Merel Smets of Glenville State is the heart and soul to the Pioneer offense, scoring nine goals on the season, ranking tied for first in the MEC and tied for 12th in Division II. Aitana Viejo joins the offense with four goals and team-high five assists, ranking tied for second in the MEC and tied for 21st in the country.
 
Between the pipes, keeper Abigail Morales is seated eighth in the MEC with a 1.62 goals against average, and 10th in saves per game (2.60). In 10 matches played, Morales has secured 26 saves, while allowing 16 goals on 80 shots faced.
 
As a unit, GSU averages 1.82 goals per game on 11.8 shots per game. The Pioneers have scored 20 goals on 14 assists to go with 45 corner kicks.
 
Noting the Yellow Jackets: Last week, West Virginia State dismantled Salem 11-0 on Wednesday, before stumbling to West Liberty at home 2-1.
 
WV State boasts a high-powered offense as Esther Dhiramo touts nine goals, tied atop the MEC and tied for 12th in the country. Ammy Mwasambu adds seven goals scored to rank sixth in the league, followed by Sandra Linares with five goals and four assists. Moreover, Alba Closa is the main facilitator on the squad with five assists, ranking tied for second in the MEC and tied for 21st in the country.
 
Goalkeeper Laura Galindo ranks sixth in the MEC in goals against average (1.33), eighth in save percentage (0.714) and eighth in saves per game (3.13). Galindo has allowed 10 goals and swatted 25 saves while facing 74 shots in eight matches played.
 
As a whole, the Yellow Jackets average 2.55 goals per game on 13.5 shots per game. WV State has scored 28 goals (t-20th in DII) on 18 assists and 43 corner kicks.
