Fall men's rugby training camp kicked off on August 15, with the Falcons returning to campus. The program now boasts 43 players, with 11 of those being talented freshmen. The freshmen include local student-athletes as well as students from Chile, United Kingdom, two players from Ireland and a student-athlete from Botswana.
A few of the returning student-athletes picked up valuable experience over the summer with Lachlan McDonald representing Chicago Lions in their national 7's campaign.
Asher Hannon represented the United States on u18-level in Spain, as they competed against Netherlands, Spain, Belgium and Czech Republic. South African
Stephan Herbst was selected to play club 7's in Austin and brought home the Most Valuable Player award.
Four players from the NDC Falcon Rugby ranks have also declared for the 2022 Major League Rugby Draft. These student-athletes that have declared include Kenyan brothers
Mark Mutuku and
Jeff Mutuku, Irish scrumhalf
Mikey O'Malley and stalwart
Michael Yeboah.
The NDC Rugby coaching staff was strengthened by the likes of
Tim Brofman, a scrum specialist who has had incredible results with national and state high school champion, St. Ignatius. Forwards coach,
Geoff Gainford returns, making this his sixth season with Notre Dame College.
Tony Vegh, who helped establish the St. Ignatius rugby program in 2005, will continue his role as student advisor with the program.
Jason Fox, having been appointed as Director of Rugby operations, will oversee both men's and women's programs.
"After doing a good job in his first year as assistant coach, I'm excited to see what
Hanno van Vuuren can do in his debut as head 15s coach," Fox said. "He brings a wealth of energy and knowledge to the program."
"As a program, we are extremely excited to compete in the new expanded Rugby East Conference," van Vuuren mentioned. "We have a group of exciting students-athletes that have returned to NDC and we hope to play a great brand of rugby."
