SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The men's and women's rugby teams departed for a spring-break trip to play in the annual St Patrick's Rugby Tournament. The Falcon men's team started their weekend campaign on a high, beating St, John's 36-0. The Falcons crossed the try-line through an individual run by
Xavier Allen, in the 5th minute, followed by another try by South African native, Stephan Herbst. The margin started to increase as Joseph van Buskirk,
Gavin Prebish,
Fadzai Mushonga and Lachlan McDonald all jotted down tries. The forwards of NDC were too dominant for St John's and set a fantastic platform to attack from. Herbst, McDonald and Marcus Jansen van Vuuren were among the three new debutants who gained their first caps for the NDC Falcons.
The second match vs Cardinals Collegiate saw a different line-up, allowing all players equal opportunity to compete in the tournament.
Xavier Allen capitalized on the opponent's mistakes and once again opened up the scoring for the Falcons. NDC stalwart
David Grecol, turned defense into attack making six turnovers and scoring two tries. Spring-recruiting looked to have paid off as debutants, Stephan Herbst, Marcus Jansen van Vuuren and Lachlan McDonald all crossed the try-line.
Michael Yeboah scored a phenomenal try to celebrate his birthday, beating five defenders on his way to the try-line. Strong carries by
Quentin von der Lieth and
Hamish Watson led to a try by
Gavin Prebish. The match seemed to be a great spectacle of running rugby, ending 52-0 in favor of the Falcons.
NDC men's advanced to the final on Sunday to face the University of Tennessee, on the main field. The Falcons seemed to be in fine form as great handling skills were displayed by the whole team and saw great runs by Prebish, Mushonga and Eddie Arens. The scrums were a masterpiece with neither team willing to yield a single inch and the crowd properly enjoying this titanic clash. A long series of phases led to cracks in the Tennessee defense, a storming run by Eddie Arens led to Captain
Cameron Mills scoring for NDC. The first half ended 7-3 in favor of the NDC Falcons. With NDC sticking to their player rotation policy, the second half saw a new team on the field. In the 2nd half, discipline errors saw the Falcons get pushed back into their own half. The only try against NDC for the tournament was scored in the 59th minute (out of 60) with the match ending 10 – 7 in the favor of Tennessee.
NDC returns home from Savannah with a 2nd place trophy. The focus now shifts to the upcoming 7s tournaments and local 10s tournaments.
