Baseball falls twice to UIndy on Sunday despite impressive offensive performances from several Falcons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WESTFIELD, IN – Notre Dame College (0-3) played a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon after their contest against the University of Indianapolis (3-0) was postponed from Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader featured a rollercoaster of a contest that totaled 34 hits and 29 runs scored. UIndy grabbed the win in the bottom of the ninth 15-14.

Kyle Espineli began the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to center.

The Greyhounds would respond with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning making it 4-1. Moreover, UIndy scored another three runs in the bottom of the second inning to quickly lead 7-1.

In the third inning, Alec Mendoza would send a double to left field plating another Falcon and making the score 7-2. Espineli would follow suit with his second RBI of the game on a triple, plating Mendoza, 7-3 UIndy.

Again, the Greyhounds would respond with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, pushing the score to 10-3 after three.

In the fifth inning, All-American Ben Ross and Mendoza would exchange back-to-back homeruns, both over the left field wall, cutting the deficit to 10-5.

In the very next inning, Ross showed exactly why he was named an All-American as he tanked another homerun, this time it was a grand slam over the left field wall. All of the sudden, Ross and the Falcons are down only one run (10-9) after the top of the sixth inning.

Just when Notre Dame had finally gotten back into the contest with all of the momentum, Indianapolis tacked on two more runs during the bottom half of the sixth, leaving the score at 12-9.

UIndy would tally a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, putting Notre Dame in a 14-9 hole with only three outs remaining.

The Falcons dug their talons deep one last time. In the top of the ninth, Espineli started the NDC rally with a hit by pitch, followed by Austin Mora reaching on a walk. Aaron Miller would draw another base on balls, forcing UIndy into a pitching change with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth. Tyler Shadle generated an RBI single to second to total Notre Dame's tenth run of the game. Two batters later, Michael Zeuil connected with another single, allowing two Falcons to touch home, 14-12 UIndy. Ross would tally another single to reload the bases for NDC, allowing Mendoza to complete the remarkable five-run ninth inning comeback on a two-run fielder's choice (14-14).

Brandon DeWitt led off the bottom of the ninth off with triple for UIndy and ultimately scored on a walk-off single to center field by Denton Shepler 15-14, to spoil the incredible comeback by the Falcons.

Impressively, every NDC hitter recorded a hit during the contest with Ross and Zeuli pacing the Notre Dame offense with four hits apiece. RBIs for NDC came from Ross (5), Mendoza (3), Zeuli (2), Espineli (2) and Shadle (1).

Game two of the doubleheader and the final game of the three-game weekend series went to Indianapolis 13-3.

The Greyhounds would grab an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after a double to left field.

In the top of the third inning, Alec Mendoza continued his impressive day at the plate with an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1.

The story of the series has been UIndy's ability to immediately answer Notre Dame's offense with runs of their own. During the home half of the third, the Greyhounds responded with an exclamation point after two homeruns, first a solo shot, then a three-run homer just three batters later, making it 5-1 Greyhounds.

In the seventh inning, Mendoza's bat stayed red hot with another RBI single, this time plating two Falcons. The infielder enjoyed a solid six RBI day today between the two games.

Indianapolis would tally two runs in each inning between the fourth and seventh innings to lead and ultimately win 13-3.

Ben Ross and Mendoza generated two hits each, while Kyle Espineli registered the fifth and final hit for NDC. Mendoza's hot bat led the Falcons with all three runs driven in during the contest.

Notre Dame College will be back in action on Saturday Feb. 26 with a four-game weekend series at Ohio Dominican University. Saturday will feature a doubleheader with game one slated for 1:00 p.m.
