Women’s rugby battles Michigan for National Championship, on Sunday

On Sunday, Dec. 4, Notre Dame College women's rugby will be looking to make history. The Falcons will travel to Houston to face the University of Michigan in the National Collegiate Rugby Division I National Championship game. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

The matchup on Sunday will be a matchup of the top two teams in the country. Notre Dame is currently ranked No. 2 in the NCR Division I coaches poll, while Michigan is currently No. 1.

NDC has put together another incredible season, holding a record of 7-1. The Falcons have averaged 54 points in their eight contests this season and have outscored their opponents, 432-115, which includes two shutouts. They defeated Northern Iowa, Colgate, Kent State, Clemson and Iowa - all teams that are currently ranked in the top 10 in Division I.

The Falcons won a second consecutive regional championship, two weeks ago in Reading, Pa. To begin the NCR tournament, Notre Dame defeated No. 10 Clemson, 57-5, and No. 7 Iowa, 41-19, in the regional final.

Last season, Notre Dame won the regional championship and faced Northern Iowa, the top seed, in the NCR semifinals. The Falcons fell to the Panthers but defeated No. 3 Marquette in the third-place match.

The NDC women's rugby program is looking for its second National Championship, and first since 2014, when they were a member of the American Collegiate Rugby Association (ACRA). NDC was in a similar situation in 2014, as they are this year. The Falcons lost in the National Championship match in 2013, and then came back the next season to bring home the trophy.
