Women's soccer sees Fairmont State in MEC Quarterfinal Round for second year in a row

This Week: The Notre Dame College women's soccer team will face Fairmont State in the Quarterfinal Round of the MEC Tournament of Tuesday Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in Fairmont, W.Va.
 
MEC Tournament: All four MEC Quarterfinal matchups are slated for Tuesday Nov. 1. Other Quarterfinal action features Concord hosting Charleston in the No. 2 vs. No. 3 matchup from the South, kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. West Virginia State draws Davis & Elkins at 6 p.m. in the No. 1 vs. No. 4 matchup in the South. Lastly, Frostburg State hosts Wheeling at 6 p.m. as the No. and No. 4 teams from the North.
 
On Thursday Nov. 3, the winner of the Notre Dame/Fairmont State matchup, will garner the winner of Davis & Elkins/WV State in the Semifinal Round. On the other hand, the winner of Concord/Charleston will see the winner of Frostburg State/Wheeling in the other Semifinal matchup. Both contests are slated for 4 p.m.
 
Lastly, the Mountain East Conference Championship Game will commence on Sunday Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. featuring the winners of both Semifinal games.
 
Records: NDC begins the postseason at 7-7-4, including finishing 6-6-4 inside the MEC. FSU sits at 10-3-4 (10-3-3 MEC).
 
Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels headlines the Notre Dame women's soccer program for his 20th season at the helm. Shiels carries a 194-125-34 career record, to go along with three MEC Tournament championships and four MEC Coach of the Year honors. Kernell Borneo is the head coach of Fairmont State in his second season. Borneo maintains a career mark of 18-11-7.
 
Rankings: Neither of these teams are ranked according to the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
 
Series History: NDC is 8-5-4 all-time when squaring up with Fairmont State, dating back to their first meeting in 2015 and including both team's wins this season. NDC got the best of FSU on the road on Sept. 11 (1-0), before Fairmont State avenged their defeat on Mueller Field on Oct. 19 (1-0).
 
This marks the second year in a row where the NDC Falcons will travel to the FSU Falcons in the Quarterfinal Round of the MEC Tournament. Last season, Fairmont State came away victorious 2-0.
 
Noting the NDC Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame went 1-0-1 as the Falcons maintained their streak of reaching the MEC Tournament every season since joining the conference in 2013. Junior Kalie Blaising earned NDC a tie with Concord on Wednesday (1-1) as she netted NDC's goal. On Sunday, sophomore Louisa Follert netted the sixth hat trick in program history, as she powered the Falcons to a 5-1 victory over Alderson Broaddus on Senior Day.
 
For the season, junior Madison Marino has led the Notre Dame offense with seven goals scored, 16 points and 30 shots taken. Freshman Mardiza Desir and Follert each clock in at five goals scored, while Blaising has recorded four on the year.
 
Freshman Emma Buda leads the team with 19 shots on goal, as she is tied for the team lead with two assists.  Marino and senior Blake Allen also have two dimes on the year as Notre Dame has 12 players who have posted an assist on the season.
 
In goal, senior Jordan Pasalaqua leads the MEC in shutouts (7), while ranking third in save percentage (.835), fourth in goals against average (.894) and sixth in saves per game (4.47).
 
On the year, Notre Dame has scored 29 goals on 11.1 shots per game, to go with 15 assists, 76 corner kicks and 82 team saves. The Falcons rank 16th in the country in shot accuracy with a mark of .581.
 
Noting the FSU Falcons: Last week, Fairmont State went 1-1 with a win against Charleston and loss to Frostburg State. Against UC, three different goal scorers got the job done for FSU as they won 3-1. However, on Sunday, FSU was shutout by Frostburg State 1-0, snapping their 10-match unbeaten streak.
 
Kuzinski is the heart and soul to the FSU offense with 16 goals scored, 100 shots and 44 shots on goal. She currently leads the MEC in shots per game (5.88) and shots on goal per game (2.59), while ranking tied for first in goals scored. Moreover, Kuzinski leads the nation in shots per game, while ranking soxth in shots on goal per game and tied for sixth in goals scored.
 
Lesbia Alejandra Puerto Sorto is another player to keep an eye on as she is second on the team in goals (6), while being second on the team and tied for ninth in the MEC with five assists. Jessica Schneider is the top facilitator for FSU with seven assists, ranking tied for third in the conference.
 
Kennedy Taylor has flashed a solid season in goal, as she leads the MEC in save percentage (.844), while being second in goals against average (.726), tied for third in shutouts (5) and 10th in saves per game (3.82).
 
As a team, Fairmont State has scored 33 goals on 16.7 shots per game, to go with 17 assists, 70 corner kicks and 65 team saves.
