Volleyball hits the road for three matches this week

This Week: The Notre Dame College volleyball team will hit the road for three games. On Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. NDC will play at West Liberty. Over the weekend, the Falcons will travel to Glenville State University on Friday Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., before turning around to face Concord University on Saturday Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
 
Records: NDC begins the week at 10-15 and 4-5 inside the Mountain East Conference, placing them in seventh place. WLU is currently 15-9 (5-4 MEC) and in sixth place in the MEC. GSU sits at 14-11 (3-6 MEC) and tied for the eighth and final MEC tournament spot. CU enters the week on a 10-match losing streak at 6-19 (0-9 MEC).
 
Coaches Corner: Riley Coleman and Kathleen Egan are co-head coaches of the Notre Dame College volleyball program, holding a career record of 5-5. Riley Schenk is the head coach of West Liberty in her third season, with a career record of 43-26. Keven John heads the Glenville State program with a 17-30 career record in his second season. Lastly, Kate Dillon is the head coach of Concord in her 14th season. Dillon owns a 157-266 career record.
 
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Week #8 Poll.
 
Series History: Notre Dame is 9-12 all-time when facing West Liberty, dating back to their first meeting in 2011, and including NDC's 3-1 victory back on Sept. 20 inside Murphy Gymnasium. NDC is 8-1 all-time against Glenville State since 2011, including the Falcons straight set victory last season. Lastly, NDC is 5-3 all-time against Concord, dating back to their first meeting in 2013 and including the Falcons 3-1 win last year.
 
Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame went 1-1, beginning with a 3-1 defeat at Davis & Elkins, despite a team-high 14 kills from senior Kaye Dregalla. The Falcons concluded their week strong with a straight set victory at home against WV Wesleyan. Sophomore Caris Cross dished out a season-high 31 assists in the win.
 
Dregalla has led Notre Dame offensively all season long with 233 kills at 2.68 kills per set. She is joined by a quartet of Falcon attackers in senior Carli Derda (149), sophomore Samantha Comer (141), freshman Ryleigh Ronald (137) and junior Kelsie Palmer (132).
 
Sophomore Jayme Zoeckler has set up the Falcon attack this season by totaling 632 assists at 8.32 assists per set. Zoeckler ranks fourth in the MEC in assists per set.
 
Defensively, sophomore libero Kiley Kalina continues to pace the team with 419 digs at 4.60 digs per set. Kalina ranks third in the MEC and tied for 21st in the country in total digs. She is joined by sophomore Grace Smotek (208), junior Ellie Schenk (199), Zoeckler (168) and freshman Sierra Nausieda (159) who have all tallied triple digit digs on the year.
 
At the net, Ronald and Derda get the job done at middle blocker with 78 and 73 blocks, respectively.
 
As a team, Notre Dame College generates 11.3 kills per set on a .169 hit percentage, to go with 10.2 assists per set, 16.5 digs per set, 1.9 blocks per set and 1.5 aces per set. The Falcons currently rank 15th in the country with 1,517 total digs.
 
Noting the Hilltoppers: Last week, West Liberty went 1-1, beginning with an impressive five-set victory at West Virginia State. Riley Cudnik turned in 18 kills and nine blocks during the win. On Friday, the Hilltoppers fell in four sets to Charleston, despite Nyia Setla's game-high 38 digs.
 
Ruby Countryman leads the West Liberty offense at 201 kills, while ranking seventh in the MEC with a .309 hit percentage. She is followed by four other Hilltoppers who register triple digit kills in Cudnik (172), Kirsten Bogunovich (156), Kaija Sydlowski (142) and Nina Billotto (129).
 
Haley Zeck and Bogunovich have tag teamed the setting duties with 473 and 284 assists this season, respectively.
 
Defensively, Setla is the team's libero by recording 518 digs at 6.02 digs per set. Setla currently ranks first in the conference in digs and digs per set, while sitting second in the NCAA Division II in digs and third in digs per set.
 
At the net, Countryman has swatted 93 attacks and ranks sixth in the MEC with 1.08 blocks per set.
 
As a unit, West Liberty posts 12.2 kills per set on a .177 hit percentage, to go with 11.2 assists per set, 17.9 digs per set, 2.2 blocks per set and 1.8 aces per set. The Hilltoppers rank ninth in the country in team digs (1,540), while being 12th in digs per set.
 
Noting the Pioneers: Last week, Glenville State went 1-1, beginning with a five-set victory at home against Frostburg State. Katarzyna Niderla led the game with 19 kills. On Friday, Niderla led the match again with 10 kills, however GSU fell in straight sets at Fairmont State.
 
As aforementioned, Niderla is the clear leader on offense for Glenville State with 296 kills at 3.15 kills per set. Niderla ranks sixth in the MEC in hitting percentage (.315) and eighth in kills per set. She is joined by Rita Kelly (176) and Nalaina Funk (119) who post triple digit kills.
 
Sarah Grainger (435) and Julia King (293) have split the setting duties for the Pioneers, as they clock in at 4.94 and 4.88 assists per set.
 
Niderla and Helin Halden are third and fourth in the Mountain East with 0.53 and 0.52 aces per set, respectively.
 
Five players post triple digit digs on the season with Lindsay Winkler leading the squad at 323 digs at 3.51 digs per set.
 
As a whole, Glenville State flashes 10.8 kills per set on a .161 hit percentage, to go with 9.3 assists per set, 15.3 digs per set, 1.7 blocks per set and 2.3 aces per set. The Pioneers rank 15th in nation in service aces per set.
 
Noting the Mountain Lions: Last week, Concord went 0-3, beginning with a straight set loss against Fairmont State. Kyndra Pilant led all players with 11 kills on the day. On Wednesday, Pilant generated a team-high 21 kills as they fell in five sets to Bluefield State. To close out the week, the Mountain Lions dropped a straight set match at Frostburg State University on Friday evening.
 
Hannah Steele is the offensive leader for Concord with 256 kills at 2.98 kills per set. Steele currently ranks 10th in the MEC in kills per set. She is joined by Pilant (178), Amber Hall (155) and Gracie Brackney (138) who all post triple digit kills.
 
Kenzee Chaffin ranks fifth in the MEC in assists as she leads Concord with 583 at 7.29 assists per set.
 
Defensively, the Mountain Lions are balanced in the backline with six players recording more than 150 digs on the season. Chaffin (187), Kaylee Spees (185) and Steele (183) lead the defense.
 
As a unit, Concord posts 9.9 kills per set on a .140 hit percentage, to go with 9.0 assists per set, 13.4 digs per set, 1.2 blocks per set and 1.4 service aces pet set.
