Falcons stumble on the road to Davis & Elkins

Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. – After successfully grabbing the first set with efficient offensive play, the Notre Dame College volleyball team (9-15, 3-5 MEC) fell in four sets on the road to Davis & Elkins College (12-8, 5-3 MEC). Senior Kaye Dregalla paced the NDC offense with 14 kills on the night.
 
Notre Dame began the contest with a 3-0 lead following a kill by Dregalla. However, D&E tied the contest up at 7-7. The Falcons responded with a 7-0 run to reclaim a 14-7 lead. Sophomore Grace Smotek tallied one of her game-high three service aces to cap off the run. Despite, the Senators push, NDC grabbed set one, 25-20 following a Smotek kill.
 
Notre Dame soared to an early second set lead 9-4, before opening the set up 14-8. Davis & Elkins answered with seven of the next eight points to tie the game at 15-15. D&E then closed out the set with another 7-1 run, winning 25-20.
 
Davis & Elkins controlled the third set from start to finish, winning 25-11.
 
The Falcons began the fourth set by holding the lead for the majority of the first half. After a pair of kills from senior Blaire Barr, NDC led 14-11. Next, D&E used a 6-0 run to leap ahead 17-14. The 6-0 run turned out to be the deciding factor as the Senators won 25-22.
 
As aforementioned, Dregalla led Notre Dame offensively with 14 kills, followed by Barr with 10 and sophomore Samantha Comer with seven.
 
Sophomore Jayme Zoeckler turned in a double-double on the night with 26 assists and 10 digs.
 
Fellow sophomore libero Kiley Kalina aided the NDC defensive effort with a game-high 21 digs, along with Smotek who logged 11.
 
Freshman Ryleigh Ronald registered a game-high five blocks at the net.
 
Notre Dame College finished with 45 kills on a .172 hit percentage, to go with 38 assists, 65 digs, eight blocks and five aces.
 
The Falcons will be back in action on Friday Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. when West Virginia Wesleyan comes to Murphy Gymnasium.
