SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – This season, when the calendar flips to March, volleyball gets to celebrate clinching a spot in the conference tournament. Notre Dame College swept a double-header with Frostburg State University, on Tuesday, winning both games by a score of 3-0.
In match one, the Falcons put some distance between themselves and Frostburg with a 7-1 run, to go ahead 16-10. The Falcons would win the first set by a score of 25-19. Sophomores
Kaye Dregalla and
Sarah DeGeorge each had three kills to start the day.
Frostburg State fought back in the second set. The game was tied 10 times and although FSU only grabbed the lead once, they did not allow NDC to extend their lead over four points. A 3-0 run put the Falcons ahead 24-20, and then the Bobcats put three straight on the board to close within one. NDC closed the match and won, 25-23. Dregalla added seven kills in the set.
"Frostburg is a good team," head coach
Travis Hinkle said. "Their record does not resonate how talented they are. They are a young team, well coached and they're going to be a very good team in the near future."
After Frostburg took a 3-1 lead in the third set, NDC scored six consecutive points, using four kills and an ace. Later, the Falcons scored seven straight and pulled ahead by 12, 21-9. The Falcons would win, 25-15.
Notre Dame recorded 10 aces in the game, which is sixth in program history for a three-set match. Junior
Katie Richardson put herself second in program history with five aces in a three set match. Dregalla had 13 kills and DeGeorge added 10 kills and 17 digs. Freshman
McKenzie Andrix recorded a season-high 24 assists along with 11 digs. Four players contributed double-digit digs, with junior
Amelia Kaeberlein leading the way with 27.
"Our coaches have changed up the defense a lot, going around the block," Kaeberlein said, when speaking about the numbers she has put up this year. "So just filling the holes between the blocks has really helped me get the digs up."
Frostburg State started the second match jumping out to a lead. Four consecutive points for the Bobcats, three kills and an ace, put FSU up 8-4.
Frostburg still led 18-14, before NDC grabbed a lead with seven straight points. But, FSU worked right back and had set point, 24-23. The Falcons took a timeout and then DeGeorge put down two kills and sophomore
Audrey Kostelac finished the game with a kill. Notre Dame won 26-24.
"[Playing Frostburg twice] was a struggle, none of us have been in that position," Kaeberlein mentioned. "We've played a couple double-headers in the past, but never against the same team, twice, so I'm happy that we came out strong and won in three, both times."
Frostburg, again, took a big lead in the second set, leading 12-6 at one point. Down 14-8, the Falcons took the lead with seven consecutive points. DeGeorge had a kill and an ace, while Kostelac added two kills during the run.
The Bobcats led 18-17, but NDC had another answer. An 8-1 run closed the game out for the Falcons, who won, 25-19.
DeGeorge, who led the team with 12 kills, had six kills in the third set and the Falcons were able to finish the day with a 25-15 set win.
Andrix finished with 17 assists and Richardson added 15. Andrix also had 11 digs and Kaeberlein led the team with 19.
"The best thing about tonight, along with our defense being good again, was our high energy that every player had, no matter if they are in the game or on the sideline," Hinkle said. "I think that resonated to what we wanted to do on the court and its never easy to get six wins in a three-hour period, so I am happy we took care of business tonight."
Notre Dame finishes the regular season on the road against Alderson Broaddus University. The match is scheduled for March 5, starting at 7 p.m.
