WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – For the second time in two weeks, Notre Dame College and West Liberty University went to five sets. On Tuesday, West Liberty snuck by in the rematch of the season opener, winning the match, 3-2.
WLU jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set and the Falcons responded with a 6-1 run, to close the gap to one point. The Hilltoppers would pull ahead and close out the set with a 25-19 victory.
The Falcons led for much of the second set, but West Liberty put together a late 6-2 run to grab a 19-16 advantage. Then, the two teams started exchanging the lead. NDC scored four consecutive points to grab a 23-21 lead, before West Liberty scored three straight and were sitting at set point. However, the Falcons closed the set by scoring four of the final five points, including three kills, to win, 27-25.
After West Liberty won, 25-16, in set three, NDC was ready for the fourth set. Senior
Destinee Harris had three kills early, and the Falcons were on top, 8-2. WLU closed the gap to two points, 16-14, but the Falcons finished strong for a set win, 25-22, tying the match at two.
In set five, the Hilltoppers jumped out to a ten-point lead and carried that to a set victory.
"The match was a roller coaster, where each team went on highs and lows," said head coach
Travis Hinkle. "We made adjustments to rebound after losses in sets one and three, but West Liberty had a key run in the fifth set to seal the deal."
Sophomore
Sarah DeGeorge led the team with 12 kills to go along with 20 digs. Freshman
McKenzie Andrix finished with a career-high 23 assists and junior
Katie Richardson totaled 21 assists and a career-high 24 digs. Junior
Amelia Kaeberlein had a career-high with 37 digs. Freshman
Ellie Schenk added a career-high 19 digs and
Destinee Harris gave NDC two solo blocks and four block assists.
The Falcons set season-highs in digs (115) and total blocks (9).
"Whenever you play West Liberty, you know it's going to be a long battle and, unfortunately, this time we didn't come home with a win," Hinkle mentioned. "Now we look forward at being home for a couple weeks and it starts with Alderson Broaddus on Friday."
Notre Dame and Alderson Broaddus University square off on Feb. 19, at 7 p.m.
