SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – No. 5 Notre Dame College celebrated Senior Night on Friday with a 40-11 dual meet victory over the University of Findlay, that included five NDC pins and two Tech. Falls.
The eight Falcons' seniors who were recognized with their families on the mat, were
Hunter Bray,
Emilio Fowler,
Jesse Jaime Jr.,
Zach Kelly,
Taylor Misuna,
Jordon Tague,
Alonzo Turner and
Tony Vezzetti.
"It's special that everybody is here for one of the last home dual meets," Misuna said. "It was nice to have my parents up here. They've supported me throughout the years, so it was cool to have them here for Senior Night."
"That's how you go out [on Senior Night]," said Head Coach
Sonny Marchette. "The team wrestled well and they pulled for the seniors to have a great night. And I think they did. The seniors who competed tonight did really well and that's what it's about."
Hunter Bray (133 lbs.) and
Kelan McKenna (141) came out ready for battle as they pinned Dakota Blanton and Derek Sharp, respectively. McKenna ended his matchup in less than a minute.
Misuna put on a show at 157 lbs. He led 18-4, over Alex Isbrandt, after one period. The matchup was called after Misuna put up three more points and won via tech fall.
"I feel like we're at a turning point right now," Misuna said, talking about the Falcons. "We haven't had our best tournament so far, we haven't had our best showing. I think tonight is the first night we saw everyone perform on the same page and on the same level. As a team, if we can keep the momentum going, we're going to have shot rolling into postseason."
Three of the final five Notre Dame wrestlers pinned their opponent. Tague pinned Hunter Reed at 165,
Michael Viramontes pinned Keigan Yuhas at 197, and
Jared Campbell pinned Caleb Carpenter in the heavyweight class. Interestingly, Viramontes' lead was just 1-0 after a tightly contested first round, but he secured a fall in the third period.
Tony Vezzetti also won at 184, defeating Danny Rosales with a 17-2 tech fall.
"I thought the energy with our guys was great," Marchette mentioned. "I thought we got some big points tonight and they were looking for [points]. That's the biggest difference that I've seen from the last couple weeks. I thought we have wrestled well, but tonight, I think we wrestled with a little more fire. We saw opportunities and seized them, which made the difference. They all wrestled well."
Notre Dame stays home to face Lake Erie College on February 12. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
