Notre Dame falls to Ashland

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Sunday afternoon, Notre Dame College fell behind early and came up just short in a comeback attempt against Ashland University, who won 18-15. The Falcons are now 5-3 in duals this season.

The dual started with the 165 lbs. weight class. Ashland's Christian Price and NDC's Alonzo Turner were locked in a tight battle, ending the first round scoreless before Price led 3-1 at the end of two. Turner completed a takedown with 35 seconds left, but Price held on to win by decision after closing the match with a takedown of his own.

The Falcons started to turn things around when Michael Viramontes took the mat for an exciting match at 197. Late in the third period Viramontes trailed 2-0, but then took one point for stalling and quickly earned two more for a takedown. Trailing 3-2, Ashland's Peter Abraham completed a takedown to retake the lead. But, Viramontes responded with a takedown of his own and held on to win 5-4, giving NDC three points.

No. 2 Jared Campbell was in control for most of his matchup and won at 285, bringing NDC within three points, 9-6. Ashland responded by earning six points with a pin, moving their lead to 15-6.

No. 1 Hunter Bray had his work cut out against Ashland's Lawrance Dudgeon. Bray and Dudgeon were tied at one, early in the third round. A late takedown gave Bray a 3-1 win. At 141, No. 7 Kelan McKenna gave NDC three more points as he expanded his lead late in the second round and throughout the third. The Falcons' No. 7 Taylor Misuna beat Cameron Jenkins at 157, but NDC fell by three points.

Notre Dame will now prepare for the Mountain East Conference Tournament, which will take place February 1, in West Liberty, W.Va.
