SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In a battle of two teams tied for the fourth, and final tournament spot in the Mountain East Conference, Notre Dame College comes out victorious by a score of 14-8, over the University of Charleston. With the win, NDC ties their record for most conference victories in a season since joining the MEC.
Following a quick shot by Notre Dame (6-6, 2-2 MEC) less than a minute into the game, Charleston (3-7, 1-3 MEC) went down the field and Peyton Harris put the ball in the net at the 28:05-mark. The ball then changed possession several times by turnovers on both sides and three shots by Charleston, which were all saved. Notre Dame scored their first goal of the game, with 18:13 to go in the first half, when sophomore
Bridie Schmalz found the netting.
At the 12:59-mark, sophomore
Selena Carter connected on her first free position shot of the day, which put the Falcons up 3-2. From that point on, NDC did not give the lead away. Charleston scored the final two goals of the half and the two teams were tied, 4-4, at halftime.
NDC came out on fire in the second half, scoring nine consecutive goals and pulling ahead, 13-4. Nine straight goals mark the Falcons' second longest single-game goals streak, this season. During that span, freshman
Danyelle Hardy scored four times, while Carter and freshman
Leslie Diaz each scored twice and freshman
Katie Wendell added one.
Charleston scored the next four goals as the game went through twists and turns of yellow cards and fouls. All four of the goals were women-up opportunities for UC, but the Falcons did not allow the lead to decrease any more.
"Keeping composure was huge," said Head Coach
Pam Jenkins. "When we went down four players, to see (Charleston) wasn't able to score right away, I think that shows their heart and their drive and how badly they wanted this game."
The Golden Eagles scored their final goal with 3:10 remaining in the game. Notre Dame's final goal came from Diaz, just before the clock hit zero.
Hardy finished with four goals and assisted on one. Diaz had three goals, two caused turnovers and seven draw controls. All three of Carter's goals were free position shots while senior
Taylor Henderson had two goals. Sophomore
Abigail Plewes and freshman
Victoria Eiland each caused three turnovers. Goalkeeper
Ellejanna Cicione had 12 saves and a career-high save percentage of .600.
"I'm really proud of our team for keeping their composure and coming out ready to go," Jenkins stated. "It just shows how far the program has come in the three years that I've been here. I'm just really excited. We're going to enjoy this but then get ready for Sunday, to play UVa-Wise."
"I give the players the credit," the coach explained, when talking about the team's improvement. "They had goals in mind and they're accomplishing them. We have to stay forward, stay on track and keep playing hard."
For Charleston, Aryanna Jones and Brianna Rock led the team with two goals, each. Rachel Kerwin and Renee Gering each had three caused turnovers. Kyra Tye had 10 saves.
The Falcons face off with the University of Virginia's College at Wise on April 7. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
