NDC causes 14 turnovers, but UVa-Wise gets the win

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The University of Virginia's College at Wise is still the only undefeated women's lacrosse team in the Mountain East Conference as they defeat Notre Dame College, 21-7, on Sunday afternoon.

UVa-Wise (7-5, 5-0 MEC) scored the first two goals of the game, but freshman Danyelle Hardy put the Falcons (6-7, 2-3 MEC) on the scoreboard with 25 minutes to go in the first half. The second Notre Dame goal of the game came on a free position shot by senior Taylor Henderson. NDC trailed 4-2 after 10 minutes of play.

After the Cavaliers scored their fifth goal, Notre Dame closed within two goals, again, as sophomore Bridie Schmalz took advantage of another free position opportunity, scoring her first goal of the day.
However, after the 16 minute mark in the first half, UVa-Wise went on a 12-1 run and went into the halftime break ahead, 17-4.

Late in the second half, behind 20-5, Notre Dame scored two goals in a row when junior Delaney Reardon picked up a turnover and Hardy scored with 11:41 remaining. Another UVa-Wise turnover allowed sophomore Selena Carter to put the ball in the net on the other end of the field, with six minutes remaining.

Hardy led Notre Dame with three goals, while freshman Leslie Diaz, Carter, Henderson and Schmalz had one goal. Sophomore Abigail Plewes caused two turnovers. Diaz and Carter each won three draw controls.

For UVa-Wise, five different players had three goals. Jesse French led the team with eight points (three goals, five assists). Ashley Wells led the team with three caused turnovers. The Cavaliers won 17 draw controls and totaled 11 assists.

The Falcons will stay home and play West Virginia Wesleyan College on April 12. The first draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
