This Week: Notre Dame College hosts Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan this weekend. The Falcons will play the Pioneers on Friday, March 29, and the Bobcats on Sunday, March 31. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
Records: The Falcons are 8-15 (2-6 MEC) after going 1-3 last week. NDC ended the weekend on a high note with a 6-3 win against Concord. Glenville State is 7-15 (4-4 MEC) after most recently splitting a doubleheader with Salem on Wednesday. WVWC is 10-15 (3-5 MEC). The Bobcats also played Salem earlier this week and lost 13-5.
Coaches Corner: Len Barker is in his eighth season as the head coach at Notre Dame. Barker is 160-200-1, 97-82 MEC. James Mullins is in his sixth season at the helm of the Glenville State team. Randy Tenney pulls double duty for West Virginia Wesleyan as the schools head baseball coach and athletic director. Tenney has been the Bobcats head coach for the past 27 years and holds a record of 671-442-7; he was named the AD on June 11, 2012.
Rankings: None of the teams competing this week were ranked in the March 25 National College Baseball Writers' Association Poll.
Series History: Notre Dame has a strong history against Glenville State. The Falcons are 12-2 against the Pioneers. Things are closer with the Bobcats, but NDC still holds an 8-5 record against West Virginia Wesleyan.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame will look to recover in Mountain East Conference play after a 2-6 start. This weekend may be the start of that recovery against two teams the Falcons have historically played well against. In 2018, NDC was 1-7 prior to its weekend against GSC and WVWC. The Falcons won three of four over that weekend and ended up .500 in conference play. Helping Notre Dame get back on track will be pitcher
Tyler Gault and first baseman/designated hitter
Joseph Paskell. Gault won against Concord last week for his 10th career win to be the eighth player in NDC history to earn double digit wins. Paskell is currently on a 19-game hitting streak and has a season .403 batting average.
Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State has been dependent on pitching to come out ahead this season. Of the team's seven wins, six have come when holding opponents to four runs or fewer. But holding teams to a low run count does not guarantee a victory for the Pioneers. GSC is 6-5 overall when opponents score under five runs. Highlighting things for Glenville State is Tyler Phillips, who has a team-high 26 hits, which has led to a batting average of .448.
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has won three of its last four MEC games coming into the weekend. The Bobcats have relied on offensive output this season as WVWC is 9-3 when scoring more than five runs and 1-12 when scoring five runs or fewer. Wesleyan has not won any games scoring fewer than five runs. With the ninth-ranked batting average in the league (.251), the Bobcats have struggled at the plate. Alex Skinner, who has started in 14 games this season, has been a bright spot for the team with a batting average of .378 that ranks 11th in the MEC.
