SAVANNAH, Ga. – To start the spring season, Notre Dame College men's rugby traveled to compete in the St. Patrick's Day 15's Tournament. NDC defeated Virginia Military Academy, Clemson University and the University of Tennessee, convincingly, to take home the trophy.
Playing games that consisted of two 25 minute halves, the Falcons faced Virginia Military Academy in their first game of the weekend. NDC played a well-structured system of both attack and defense leading to a very strong 61-0 victory over VMI.
In the second game on Saturday, the Falcons faced Clemson. After a few hours in the sun and the Savannah heat, the team played a very physical game. While keeping calm and working together, the Falcons came out with another victory, winning 24-0.
According to the coaching staff, they were very happy with the team's performance on day one. Putting together back-to-back shutouts was a great sign of a very positive defensive display.
The team then took on Tennessee in the final game, on March 10. Tennessee was the only other team that had not been scored on in the tournament, to that point. After what turned out to be the Falcons' best performance of the weekend, Notre Dame won the tournament with a 34-5 victory over the Volunteers.
The team now begins its preparation for the upcoming sevens season, culminating with USA Rugby Collegiate Sevens Nationals in Tuscon, Arizona.
They will play next, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, against the University of Mary Washington.
