WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – For the third consecutive season, No. 5 Notre Dame College wrestling will enter the NCAA Division II National Tournament following a team win in the Regional Tournament. On Saturday, the Falcons posted 125 points and had seven individuals advance to Nationals.
"We're very pleased to win our region, again," said head coach
Frank Romano. "Really pleased to have seven qualify and nine place winners. Everyone we brought here contributed with points."
This season, only the top-three who placed in the Regional Tournament would go on to compete for a National title.
Jose Rodriguez, at 141 lbs., and
Tony Vezzetti, at 184, took first place in their weight brackets.
Rodriguez, who battled injury at times this season, looked strong. He pinned Jared Ford (Urbana) and Ryan Skonieczny (Findlay) in order to get to the final match. He then defeated Jared Donahue (Wheeling Jesuit) by decision (11-6). Donahue was ranked fifth, nationally, as Rodriguez, ranked 10th, upset him for the victory.
Vezzetti won with a major decision and a decision to get the first place match. He then took down Brody Conner (UIndy) by decision (10-3) to win at 184.
Cornell Beachem Jr. (174) and
Kameron Teacher (285) both grabbed second place.
Roberto Campos (125),
Hunter Bray (133) and
Anthony Dailey (165) took third place.
In the team scores, Notre Dame led No. 13 University of Indianapolis (122.5 points), No. 2 Wheeling Jesuit University (121.5), No. 23 Ashland University (84.5) and No. 13 Tiffin University (77) in the top-five.
