ST. LOUIS, Mo. – On Sunday, No. 4 Notre Dame College wrestled twice at the Dr. Lombardi Maryville Duals. They went up against two teams ranked in the top-15 in NCAA Division II, defeating the University of Indianapolis, 35-3, and Maryville University, 19-15.
"They wrestled hard today," said head coach
Frank Romano. "We feel really good about beating both of the teams we faced. We had pretty good scores."
UIndy, who is ranked 15th overall and 16th in the dual meet rankings, was down eight points in a blink of an eye. Notre Dame's
Roberto Campos and
Kelan Mckenna each won by major decision in the first two weight classes.
Although
Jose Rodriguez was under the weather, he still won his matchup at 141 lbs. against Angelo Robles, who was ranked No. 9 in the nation.
The only match that NDC lost was at 149 lbs. But the Falcons bounced right back with back-to-back pins by
Zach Kelly at 157 and
Jashon Hubbard at 165. Those two matches gave NDC a combined 12 points.
In the second matchup of the day, the Falcons took on the host Maryville, ranked No. 13. After losing two of the first three matches,
Taylor Misuna (149) and
Zach Kelly (157) each won by decision to make the score, 9-6, in favor of NDC.
A disqualification at 165, put six points on the scoreboard for MU. NDC then worked right back into the dual, winning by decision at 174 and 184. A loss at 197 gave Maryville a 15-13 advantage.
However, No. 1 ranked
Kameron Teacher gave the Falcons the push they needed, winning with a late pin to give Notre Dame six points.
"Everyone who came with us got work today," Romano mentioned. "We are one step closer to being ready for the Regionals."
