Three place at Cleveland State Open

CLEVELAND – No. 5 Notre Dame College wrestling took to the mats on Saturday at the Cleveland State Open which represented the final Open for the Falcons in the 2019 calendar year. Against plenty of Division I competition, three NDC wrestlers placed, with Anthony Marra (174) placing third, Jared Campbell (285) taking fourth and Alonzo Turner (165) bringing home eighth.

At 174 lbs., Anthony Marra had a solid day. After receiving a bye in the first round, Marra defeated Brad Mendoza (Ohio) and Kevin Holman (Mercyhurst) by decision, to advance to the semifinal. After falling in the semifinal, the Falcons' grappler took third place after a medical forfeit.

Jared Campbell, who is ranked seventh at heavyweight in NCAA Division II, continues to put together impressive outings. He did not receive a bye, so he defeated Gaige Willis in a close 1-0 decision in the first round and then pinned Collin Kelly, of Cleveland State, at the 44-second mark of the second round. He would take fourth place.

Alonzo Turner went to Sudden Victory in round two against Patrick Daum, of West Virginia. Turner moved on to the quarterfinal with a 7-5 win over Daum. Later in the day, following a loss, Turner bounced back with a win over Kamal Adewumi (Ohio) by decision. In the consolation bracket semifinal, Turner was defeated, but walked away with eighth place.

No. 1 ranked Tony Vezzetti did not place, but won the first two rounds over Division I wrestlers at 184 lbs. In fact, the senior only saw Division I competition all day. Vezzetti defeated Ryan Neu (Kent State) by major decision and then defeated Jon Halverson (Northwestern) by decision.

Other notable finishes on the day included Kolbie Lange beating Jacob Sherman (Kent State) with a pin in the second round at 133. Justin Crawford defeated Cameron Monzadeh (Michigan State) with an 8-1 decision in consolation round two at 157. And at 165, Jack Rogan pinned Sean Billups (Kent State) at the 55-second mark.

The Falcons have a quick turnaround as they head to Fairmont State University to wrestle in their first dual meet of the season, on December 17. The competition is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
