Soccer brings season to close this week

This week: Notre Dame College finishes its regular season this week with two MEC games. The Falcons travel to Concord tomorrow, November 6, for a 12 p.m. game before hosting a game on Sunday, November 10 against Urbana. Sunday's game will kick at 3 p.m. after a Senior Day celebration.

Records: Notre Dame split a pair of games last week to move its record to 8-4-4 (7-3-3 MEC). Concord has been dominant this season, and is currently on a 10-game winning streak. The Mountain Lions are 15-1 (11-1 MEC). Urbana is 6-8-1 (6-6-1 MEC) after most recently losing to Concord 4-0.

Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels is in his 17th season as the head coach for the Falcons. During his time at NDC, Shiels has gone 173-105-24 with a 78-13-11 MEC record. Luke Duffy is in his fourth year at the helm of Concord's women's soccer team. Duffy is 40-23-10 (30-19-8 MEC), turning a three-win team in his first season to three straight squads with 10 or more victories. Kevin Mounce is also in his fourth season. Completing his fourth season, Mounce is currently 15-44-6 (14-37-6 MEC).

Rankings: Concord received votes in the United State Soccer Coaches Poll released November 4, but did not make the top 25. The Mountain Lions are currently the No. 4 team in the Atlantic Regional rankings.

Series History: Notre Dame holds solid records against both opponents historically. The Falcons are 10-2-1 against Concord heading into their meeting. NDC lost to Urbana for the first time this season in 1-0 fashion. That game broke a 13-game winning streak against the Blue Knights for Notre Dame.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame has needed multiple goals in a game to win this season with seven of its eight wins coming from scoring two or more goals. The Falcons won their first 1-0 game on October 20 against Charleston. NDC has only allowed multiple goals to be scored against them twice this season, resulting in a 3-2 win at Edinboro and a 0-2 loss against Frostburg State. Notre Dame will face a challenge against Concord, who has allowed multiple goal in just one game this season. CU lost that game 2-1 at West Virginia Wesleyan. Urbana may be an easier opponent to put points up against as the Blue Knights have given up two or more goals nine times this season. Urbana is 2-7 in those contests.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord has bullied its way through the season, outscoring opponents 47-5, an average score margin of +2.63. But it looks like tomorrow's game may be low scoring. Concord and Notre Dame are two of four teams in the MEC who allow less than one goal per game. The other two teams who have allowed less than 1.0 goals against on average are West Virginia Wesleyan and Fairmont State. In three games against those two teams, CU is 2-1 and has scored just five goals.

Noting the Blue Knights: Urbana's six wins is the most since 2015 and is double the win total head coach Kevin Mounce has recorded each of the past three seasons. Much of the success has come from Alyssa Edwards's scoring. Ranking sixth in the MEC with eight goals this season, the Blue Knights are 3-1 when Edwards scores at least one goal. Edwards has scored multiple goals in three games this season. Urbana is currently third in the MEC North Standings, with a one-point lead ahead of Frostburg State. With the top three from each division making the playoffs, Urbana is eyeing a spot in the MEC Tournament for the first time in program history.
