FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Notre Dame College men's rugby traveled this past Saturday to play the University of Mary Washington in their final East Conference matchup of the year. In a dominant performance, NDC scored two tries in the first 15 minutes of the game and went on to win the contest, 59-12.
The Falcons, who came into the game ranked No. 11 in D1A Rugby, put the first try on the board, which was scored by senior
Calum Haddock. The second was from freshman
Jeff Mutuku. However, UMW competed well and at halftime, NDC held a slim 14-7 lead.
The second half is where Notre Dame really stepped it up another notch. Captain
Andrew Guerra scored the first two tries in the second stanza. The first was in the opening minute and his second was just seven minutes later. Another player who scored twice was senior
Christian Olsen. He scored his first try of the game a few minutes after Guerra's second try. He also put in the last try in the 80th minute.
Senior
Archie Paterson had a big day, as he scored one try and slotted a penalty kick in the game. For the second time ever, Paterson kicked conversions for the team, and was successful. The try scorers were Haddock,
Jeff Mutuku, Guerra (two), Olsen (two),
Sam Klimkowski,
Patrick O'Shea, Paterson and
Mark Mutuku.
"It was a great day in the office," the NDC coaching staff said. "It is a great win, to beat a team in the conference and a huge confidence boost, because the next game will be against a tough Navy team who is ranked top-5 in the nation. This will be a great game where both teams are ranked top-15 in the nation."
Notre Dame will face No. 5 Navy on November 16. The games are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., on Mueller Field.
